My girlfriend gets mad that all 4 of our cats like me better, even though she gives them treats, and buys them toys all the time. The situation is compounded by the fact that I’m not telling her why they like me more cause I’ll just get accused of “mansplaining”. But the cats like me more because I don’t beg for their attention, and I respect them as equals, so I just do some of the things cats do to indicate affection. Bump foreheads with them, rub my cheek on their cheek, talk back to them when they talk to me. I also get that they’re animals and they’re main objective is still survival, so I when I’m feeding them, calming them, or making them feel protected I make sure they’re taking in my smell, touch, voice, and sight. They also like to lick my skin since I’m not self absorbed enough to spend years lathering myself in petroleum based skin care products for the sake of my own ego. So my skin still produces the natural oils humans have for maintaining skin health, and salt from sweat. To kitties the salts and fats on our skin is actually a very tasty treat.

Some other possible viable explanations, just off the top of my head--

Men are larger and thereby need to be vetted with additional meows to ensure they're not a threat?

Female owners may react more often with hostility to a barrage of meows when they walk in the door?

Cats have an innate compunction to show deference to the largest entity in the group with additional vocalizations?

Please don’t give any life to this illogical bullshit. Men who like cats are great with them. They are often exceptional cat dads.

If I recall cats and dogs are often more friendly towards women than men. This is in general true for other animals as well who are often more hostile towards men than women.

Dogs can usually tell apart the sexes by smell and there is evidence that cats can also do this.

So it won't really be surprising if cats as such find men more intimidating than women.
