Even though it’s been years since my divorce, I still find myself reflecting on the emptiness that followed.

When you have children, your brain rewires itself. Your entire identity becomes centered around providing, protecting, and being there for them. After 10+ years of living like that, it’s no longer just a role — it’s who you are. You’re wired for it 24/7.

Then, suddenly, you’re alone.

The core of your life shifts overnight from “Father/Kids” to “Single/Man.” On paper it sounds freeing, but if you’re not ready for that shift, it creates a massive internal conflict. You’re still the same 24-7 soul, but you’re now forced to function as a 9-to-5 father on a schedule.

The contrast becomes even sharper when I dive into creative work or other interests while I’m alone. I’m still paying the price for a debt we both owe, watching the red thread fray while trying to build a home on shifting sand. I spent years providing the equipment, the support, and the presence, only to find myself in an empty house reflecting on the "unit" we used to be.

How did you guys handle that sudden identity shift? How do you reconcile the man you are when you’re alone with the father you were wired to be every single minute?
