Both dildos and erotica are multibillion-dollar industries, which suggests there is a large scale demand for both (much like porn). There's a notion around here that even below-average women can get laid by a higher-value man, and for the most part I don't doubt that they could, but it seems this is largely going unfulfilled if women resort to fantasy and self-pleasure as much as they do. So why aren't they getting laid, if it's so easy for them?

My theory is that, despite all the sexual attention women get in person/online, most guys most of the time are too chicken-shit to actually make a move. The guys I've known who actually follow through all the way on their sexual intents are few and far between. The rest might show interest and shower compliments and make sexual advances all day long, but when time comes to make it real, they fold (or screw it up badly), and then they retreat to the risk-free, rejection-free comfort of porn. Women are largely too passive and too fearful of social consequences to escalate themselves, and thus they are forced to retreat to their own fantasy world to achieve satisfaction.
