Something I've frequently seen on this subreddit is how college graduation is something that's significantly stacked in favor of women - something like 60% of graduates being female. My question is this - isn't this to be expected?
I ask because I don't want us to fall into the common feminist argument where if a gender is behind the other in that context, that it's automatically a bad thing and the result of oppression by the other gender.
A common feminist example is the perpetual myth of the "wage gap" - Sure, on paper women making 77% of what men make is bad, but when you add controls and take into account that men work more dangerous jobs, the vast majority of overtime, and the vast majority of high-paying science and tech jobs it would make sense that men as a whole would earn more than women.
I would posit that we would expect to observe a higher rate of females graduating because there are simply more career options that men tend to pursue that don't require a degree. Women tend not to seek out jobs in construction, labor, law enforcement, the military, etc.
I'm concerned that we often become the very thing we vilify by performing the knee-jerk reaction of "men are behind in subject X, let's champion that cause!" Our fledgling movement can't afford to freak out over every perceived slight like feminists can - the amount of misinformation floating around about MRAs is staggering and demonstrable, from us being called a hate group, advocates of social regression, or a facade for neo-nazis, to the point where women who post here feel the need to begin their posts by apologizing for their second chromosome lest they get downvoted to oblivion because that's what they'd expect from men posting in places like r/feminism or 2X.
I ask that we try to focus less on general inequality and more where there's a clear, unreasonable, and caustic bias against men. Seeking equality is often a false pretense; we should instead strive to make sure each gender is treated fairly.
