Talking about rape is making fun of victims? Sounds like a bad argument. But as for the numbers, the U.S department of justice reports 1 and 6 is raped. More can be learned from wikipedia's rape statistics page. However, numbers are hard to report on this area. I haven't ever heard 1 in 3 before though, sounds inflated.

The 1 in 3 number came from a terribly flawed study. What your friend doesn't know is that in their wording of the questions used for the survey, the CDC has counted consensual sex as rape if the respondent had ingested any intoxicant, without specifying amount or effect. The survey questions also used biased wording to include acts that could be described as unwanted, even if there had been no communication of that to the partner; so the respondent's reply would be interpreted as abuse even if he or she hadn't attempted any refusal of the act.

Further, the study did not count as rape most rape of men by women, by excluding the act of forcing a man to penetrate an orifice from the definition. If you look at the numbers given, in 2010, almost the same number of men were forced to penetrate a partner as the number of women who were forcibly penetrated by a partner, and the majority of those forced-to-penetrate rapes were committed by women.

Granted, it is likely based on the initial questioning method that all of the numbers are inflated... but based on one more factor - the fact that researchers used only female interviewers with the idea that this would make people more comfortable discussing rape - the numbers on men raped by women might not be as inflated as the other numbers, as their comfort level talking to a woman about that experience probably wasn't what researchers claim to have believed.

That's actually the default response.

It's entirely emotion-based.

It's also extremely effective.

Many people won't hear facts on this. They just won't. Point at that this 1/3 stat, if true, would make the US comparable to an active war-zone in a lawless sub-saharan african country and that just cannot be sustained and you'll be denounced as a rape supporter.

I wish I had some better advice for you but I haven't found any yet: if you try to tell the truth on this you will be labeled all sorts of horrible things. That's going to happen.

At best, your "friend" is an intellectually dishonest, manipulated, mentally lazy, irrational child with no mind of her own, who will simply follow the best-sounding manipulator.

At worst, she is a manipulator and liar who just wants a leg up in life by stepping on the neck of boys and men like we are simply rungs on a ladder she must climb.

With a "friend" like this, you need no enemies son.
