One common prejudice about child support non-payment and "deadbeat dads" is that the men who don't pay are deliberately witholding money that they could easily afford.

An article I remember reading on here in r/mr challenged that claim in an interesting way.

The article referenced an incident in some state in the US that did a big sweep for men who were arrears on their CS payments. The men arrested were given an immediate opportunity to pay their debt in lieu of further imprisoment. The author indicated that some very large percentage (something like 60%, iirc) of the men so arrested did not make any such payment, and were thus processed through the system.

The author's argument was that presumably a harsh punishment like imprisonment would certainly provide a strong incentive to pay up, and the large number who were unable indicated the massive debt burden that CS typically imposes on people.

So, does that sound familiar to anyone? Does anyone know of which article I hazily remember? If you do, can you please point me in the right direction? Thanks for reading.
