Quite frequently, and because of the advent of the internet, it's becoming harder to hide when you do something this repugnant.

Women have always used this ace in the hole to bludgeon men who don't co-operate.

In fact, I wouldn't say frequently, I'd say it's an epidemic sized problem.

Especially in this age where the modicum of information sharing is coming from web 2.0 type sources, where people are generally free to post, write, claim as they wish. I think it's just really easy to pull off, and I don't think there's a really reliable way to easily check whether or not stuff is happening legitimately.

I don't want to take away from people who do get legitimately threatened. That sucks.

We all know, though, that there's a pretty specific group of people on the political spectrum that are "much better at internet" than the others. Feminists are a big part of this group.

Not terribly often. People yell obscenities at each other all the time over the internet. Just look at YouTube comments and people will be telling each other to go fuck themselves or whatever.

I think a lot of the death/voilence threats that get sent out are just genuine trolling.

I wouldn't be shocked to hear a not so small portion is feminist fear mongering though. That being said, something on this scale has to be fairly uncommon.

Don't know, but most likely often. The thing with these incidents is that the only ones we know about are the ones that make huge headlines. Like the Duke Lacrosse Rape case was a huge wake-up call to everyone, simply because it made the news at least every week for over a year.

There are no official statistics that I know of where we track each and every incident, nor is it mandatory to report these incidents. So who knows how many happened and either the police were not involved or once the truth was revealed everyone just went home and forgot about it.

Even IF the supposed text that she read were genuine, so what? I've been called every name in the book and I-threatened in every possible way. Oddly enough I still don't need a government agency and billions of yearly dollars to protect me from pixels on a screen.

This is kind of a tricky subject, as it's asking for a black and white answer that deals with a lot of unknown and impossible to know information. The best bet instead of giving one blanket answer is really to give multiple answers broken up into different details. I will try my best to explain things, but it will be a lengthy message.

First of, as far as places like the US, Canada, the UK etc, feminism is so widespread and so mainstream, that the core of the original philosophies permeate into everything we do. Things such as simply treating women as equals. Of course, many people have different views on whats equal, and where the line on tolerance is. However, for the most part, the original goals of feminism have been accomplished, as apparent by the fact that they have had to update their goals and change with the times. To that end, how often do I believe women (blanket term here, could be anyone) receive death and rape threats simply for being a feminist that are genuine? I don't it happens at all. You'd have to be mental to do such. I however, would believe that there are some from trolls, because well, they're fucking trolls. They don't need a reason, they don't obey our logic, and they don't care. They'll troll you for anything, no matter what. They don't troll people because they are feminist, they troll people that happen to be feminist, and the fact they are feminist just gives them a target. They could fairly well be obese and the trolls would target that, or they could be religious, or anything at all.

In other places of the world, India, the middle east, etc, I would believe without a doubt that these (mostly) women do receive death threats that are genuine. I believe this because a lot of people there are fucking crazy zealots (please forgive my terminology), and we see them back up their threats all the time.I wouldn't be surprised if 100% of these threats were real, but I don't think all of them are. I couldn't give a guesstimate of how much I think is real, because I don't have enough information. We simply see things on the news.

In terms of bloggers, tumblrs, and other online things. Well, I notice a lot of the death threats are always "anonymous private messages, that I don't want to show you because I don't want to set you off" and blah blah blah. These I believe are people simply trying to garner more favor, attention, and pity. If any of the threats themselves are not made up, I believe that those threats are from trolls. Sadly, for many of these bloggers, given on how I do see them often telling people that they should die, be killed, or that they would love to kill them, I feel no sympathy for the blogger. This is simply trolls trolling trolls trolling trolls trolling trolls. How many of them are genuine death threats? 0%.

And now for the most tricky bit. The radfems as seen on campuses and other places closer to home. Many of these people show signs of instability. They would love to twist fact for their own ends. I would highly doubt many of these people are simply "misinformed" about the facts, but are the ones going around spreading misinformation and disinformation. These people probably do receive death threats occasionally. These death threats probably come from themselves, and others in their own circle. While some may be genuine I think it would be a small amount. I would probably rate this at around 10%, going so high as to say 1 in 4 are real.

If I have not covered any groups you are interested in, please let me know. I simply tried to cover some of the most widespread parts.
