They aren't subtle. Needy people are quite overt about it.

It really depends on the person and their stage in life. Generally speaking, a needy person in the context of dating and social interactions is basically defining their self identity through another person.

Of course this is a bad thing.

Could you explain more about defining oneself through another person?

It boils down to this: Do you picture your future specifically with a girl in your arms? Does your happiness involve a girl smiling fondly at you? Do you feel more accomplished when standing next to a girl?

If you answered YES to any of these, then you are a needy person.

To add to Meatcurtainrod.... (BTW: nice name :)

Defining oneself through another person: When you're dating, you only do her hobbies, interests, and activities. She likes skating? Now you like skating. She likes shopping? Now you like shopping. She wants to go for a ride? You want to go for a ride.

You want to watch a football game? She says "no" and you don't go. You want to go for a hike? She says "no" so you don't go.

In other words, you have no life but to live her life with her. She becomes your identity. Without her, you're a blank slate.

Fear of silence.

Softness around the eyes and on the face in general. Asking instead of stating. Wearing the heart on the sleeve. Looking down instead of making eye contact. Being an open book.

What the hell are soft eyes?

"Can I ask you something?" instead of just asking is one

This can also be a sign of deference.

I have staff who will almost always preface a question in this way, because they are trepidatious of disturbing me despite the fact that I have never reacted negatively to an enquiry. Rather they have a significantly high level of respect for me and my position which gives rise to deference.

Over-eager to please at every turn.
