This is a lot bigger than you know dude. This is a battle for your very future as a man. All women do it, they acquire orbiters and then bitch to them about their boyfriends. If you allow this to happen, you will be automatically emasculated, no matter how good and pure your intentions are.

This is a great, great time to show her your "strict daddy side". When she brings that shit up, shut it down with overwhelming force:

"Listen emoface, I'm not your boyfriend. It's his job to listen to your problems. Capiche??"

Very sharp and grating, make her feel stupid for even asking. Do not sugar coat or make it polite, you want it to be shockingly dismissive.

If she responds meek and submissive, you can "soften up a little" and tell her she's cute and you'd totally listen to her if you were fucking her cute ass on the weekend, but her ass and her problems are inseparable to you like Tom & Jerry. Be cheeky, tease her about this.

If she responds haughty and tries to start a tantrum, your line is "Oho! Look who's got a bee in her bonnet now!", and again tease, make fun of her "fiercely adorable" anger instead, but stay firm and unapologetic.

Girls do NOT like to be single. They feel unloved, alone, and of low status. That's why girls branch-swing: find the new boyfriend before you leave the old one.

That one girl looks like she wants to branch swing to you. If you can't accept "cheating" and want to "stay friends until she is single", you will find that she will give up on you and find another branch that is willing to be swung to.

So yeah you got two options: either you want to fuck her so you go and escalate and get her now, or you accept to be her "friend only" now and you will never be anything but a friend to her.

What is it that you want from her?
It doesn't strike me like she's simply fishing for validation. She might be looking into a new branch. /u/SkorchZang got this bit covered.

Other than that, don't get yourself into the friendzone. It doesn't serve you any purpose and it doesn't serve her a lot of purpose either, orbiters don't add a lot of value. Be her friend.
The catch there is to lead. Her goal is talking to feel the drama and emotions, she likes it even it they're bad, and as an added bonus you'll probably comfort her. That's the friendzone. To be a better guy, at some point you CUT her mambo jambo, say "this is getting annoying and isn't doing you any good, let's talk/do something fun", and take it from there.
I suppose this is why my committed friend finds me dates once in a while.

Edit:
Do what you want, game her or be her friend, just don't do it over phone.
