you go wherever you want but you will get only as far you go. You are primarily focused on women so keep these in mind :

You can't do anything about your height if you're over the age of 18. so if you're 18+, don't think about your height. It easier said than done because height matters a lot, but it's something you simply have to accept.
You can do a lot to fix your "below average looks". It really depends on what you need to fix though. (see my next post)
you seem like an introvert given your STEM career choice and by the description of your social circle. So not only do you need to work on your confidence ( which will come with improvement/accomplishments) but also on your extroversion ( extroverts attract more attention and you need to attract attention if you want to attract women)
get good at as many things as you can.
learn to hold eye contact ( again, it will come with improvement)
learn to talk with confidence ( it will come with improvement)
eat healthy/ workout. Get ripped but don't get too buffed ( it will highlight your shortness. Focus on V-taper shape)
learn to be fun NOT funny ( fun is basically bringing out the sexual side in a girl; it will come with improvement)
MOST IMPORTANTLY -- believe you can do all of the above

do not get hooked onto one girl / always remember that even the hottest/nicest woman alive is just a person so she's not worth more than you
have fun (see above definition of fun) with as many girls as possible but only do that AFTER you have improved your looks and gained confidence
dress better/ dress according to the occasion (invest money in your wardrobe after you've improved physically.
remember all deals are "closed" in private so you will need your own place if you don't already have one.
show some emotion, whether positive or negative (don't be completely stoic); show A LOT of confidence in every situation ( will come with improvement)

Dude, you're still in the beginner's fase. I am 5'5 myself, and I'm Dutch where the average person is even taller than in the US. First things first:

Stop thinking about girls as an achievement, which is easier said than done
Start working out, go get ripped (I'm 5'5 now, weigh around 140 pounds with BF 10%, I am aiming for 145 with 6% BF)
Go do the things you want to do: I'm jumping out of a plane soon, getting my motorcycle driver's license, picking up dancing classes, learning to play the guitar, playing football (soccer) etc.
Stop worrying so much about what people think of you, and stop being so dependent on your friends. This is solved by getting out there, go do the stuff above, meet more people, this will put you in an abundancy mode

This all sounds like a lot of work, but start by doing it one at a time. Your first priority should be to start hitting the gym and eating right. Start learning about protein and all the others, and go to the gym at least 3 times a week. My suggestion would be to start in the gym by doing Starting Strength from Mark Rippetoe. Watch the vids online, go to the gym and try them, and don't be scared to ask the big guys to help you with form.

Accept your flaws and be ok with them, you are taking action to make yourself better.

Work on your body and pickup a martial art of your choice. Lift weight , eat more, gain muscle and gain confidence.

Take up partner dancing, standup comedy or any other social gathering two times a week.

Come early to classes, make time to approach women and remember it's fun to meet new women.

You could stop looking at your flaws and actually develop some qualities. But that requires effort, and confronting self limiting convictions.

There are plenty of girls shorter than you. Just pick an choose your battles.

Men are butt ugly compared to women. Literally nobody cares how cute you are, you either have the bone structure or you don't, get over it and get ripped!

Get out of the gook seat and go meet some girls, learn to talk to them, to deflect shit tests and to manage emotions. It's a skill, it's all about repetition. For pure numbers go online dating(the STEM degree will help you there) and DO NOT SETTLE DOWN. Get 20 or so first dates under your belt before you even do your first aproach.

I don't care about your friends, you are as valued to them as the idea of the low SMV is valuable to you, in both cases it strokes the ego and makes you feel okay with personal stagnation.

Hit the gym every morning, nice and early

Sort out your diet, nothing but healthy foods

Jog when you get home

Maintain good grooming/ hygiene

Start going out on the weekends

Some of the best guys at picking up chicks that I know are short Indian guys. They did not use to be social by any means, but with practice they're now some of the best.
