It never even occurred to me to be embarrassed about what I do.

Then why start now? Unless this starts actively damaging your dating life then what's the point in getting wound up about hearsay?

The Facebook movie, various nerd billionaires and millionaires, the hipness of the latest hot app, endless media obsession with tech news -- all this stuff has created a coolness around tech that you can capitalize on if you don't exhibit neckbeard traits. Plus girls all know that tech makes bank.

I actually suspect that most (if not all) of them just live a stereotypical nerdy lifestyle (video games, anime, etc.), and that's the real reason they're being labeled nerdy

Agreed. This "stigma" you've heard about but never experienced is just a bunch of omega dudes hamstering on their lack of success.

My personal theory as to why this is, is the stigma evolved over thousands of years. The scientists and programmers of today were the shamans, priests, and druids of ancient times. They didn't get the respect that the warrior class got from the ladies, and were seen as a little bit effeminate (they didn't participate in war). The exception to this seems to be doctors. They get all kinds of poon.

The difference? Doctors tend to take care of their bodies, appearance, and are narcissistic.

But stigma or no, none of that should matter if you take care of yourself and are a fun person to talk to. Be like a doctor.

In my experience it definitly carries a stigma. I deal with pretty trashy girls though. I just avoid telling them for as long as possible. "I work with my hands" and how I met your mother "please" etc.

Depends on the girl. As a fellow tech industry person of the female variety, there's a huge stigma on us. But personally, if the guy's in tech - it's awesome. He's more likely to understand what I'm talking about.

Look at how you described the benefit of your job. It makes you look like a Provider a/k/a Beta Bux when you say you work in tech. It's not hands on and manly and it's not celebrity status... It provided no vagina tingles and plants a seed in her head that you probably make good money, which could be useful.

Girls are always going to ask what you do. I own a few businesses. I usually just gloss over what I do. When initially asked. I'll say, "I'm involved with a few businesses but that's such a long conversation to have. I'll tell you all about it another time." And the move along. It shows her that I'm making money and not a bum, but at the same time I kind of neg her by saying I don't want to talk about it because it will take awhile (my shit may be too complicated for her to understand anyway, truthfully). I don't say the conversation will be "boring" because my businesses and I are not boring.

If anyone else has suggestions on how to avoid conversations when asked about work, I'm open to hearing some pointers.

To answer your question though. Yes, if you tell girls you work in tech, it's a turn off.

i give zero shits what anyone thinks about my work and hobbies. in fact if they make some uninteresting comment on it, I think it reflects poorly on them.
