If such verbal surrender was just about bearable, Karen struggled rather more with the thorniest element of her new role - sex. As Ellen outlined this aspect of the challenge, Karen found herself bridling at the instruction 'never refuse your husband sex'. She says: 'I was told to make myself available for lovemaking at least once a week.' She pauses, and adds: 'I don't like lying back and thinking of England - my marriage was in such crisis that we weren't even kissing and cuddling.

She struggled to make herself available to her husband for sex once a week? Words fail me.

Also, I want to highlight this:

'But, incredibly, it has saved my marriage. I don't do more housework - I do less, because Ali is so amazed to be thanked so nicely for every small thing he does that he has started loading the dishwasher for the first time in years. 'Before, I would just have criticised him for putting the dishes in the wrong way. He is so thrilled with the "New" Karen that he even told me to sit and watch a film the other night so he could do the ironing.

Oof, that last quote you pulled is a doozy. I think this is one of the biggest things that the mainstream How To Be A Better Wife books get way, way wrong, and that the red pill gets so right.

As women, with that craving validation thing that so many of us have, we've got to be really, really careful about what our motivations are. And I could see a woman who has just been introduced to a traditional, submissive role in a marriage being really lead off course by all the books and things that try to sell her on, "Do this and your husband will get better!" We've pretty much slapped a house dress and a strand of pearls on the status quo, there, haven't we?

(Edited to add: I do think a lot of the article was uplifting, though.)

I understand that my actions could have a positive effect on my husband's attitude and actions, but I never use it as a motive--I do it from the goodness of my heart because I want him to feel wanted/respected/trusted/etc :) I find it silly when women do things for their husband expecting something in return.

I am so very tempted to post this to Facebook... I have a lot of empowered wimmins as friends. I don't really know the states of their relationships, but I really think that this could make for powerful changed for anyone who was willing to give it a try.

I henpecked and simultaneously babied the shit out of my ex, I admit it. Unsurprisingly, this resulted in a non-existent sex life and the death of attraction, as well as depression and withdrawal from life on both of our parts. I'm not saying that this mentality could have/should have saved that relationship, but I think being more mindful of the power dynamics in interpersonal relationships has done my life a world of good. I apply this shit everywhere now and it hasn't always been easy-- my natural instinct is to control things, and it's been an uphill battle to rationally recognize when a power struggle is worth pursuing rather than running on feels and instinct exclusively... But the results have been great. I get along better with coworkers, I know how to more deftly manage conflicts, and my romantic relationship is outrageously filled with love, admiration, and attraction (going both ways!)
