I am a sort of fan of John Wayne. I have seen some of his movies that I really liked and some that I don't. Ones that I like include McLintock, El Dorado, Rio Bravo and Operation Pacific.

They all go back and forth with male-female relationships and it is interesting to me how they viewed the world just 60 years ago.

In The Cowboys, John Wayne has decided to hire all the boys from the local school to help him drive his cattle to market. He comes into the school, stopping all lessons, and tells the female teacher that he needs to speak to the boys. She asks if he needs to speak to the young ladies, and he says, "No. I don't really have anything to say to young ladies." To which I chuckle....you and me both, boss. The teacher then says, "Well then, we will bow to the fact that it is a man's world and excuse ourselves."

Granted this is a 40 year old movie about a story that would have been approximately 120 years ago, but did she really just say that? And for that to even be a spoken line that makes it into public light, it must have been an idea at some point. I guess the point that might be taken away here is that at one point in history, when we were cutting a path out of the frontier, it would have to seem that it was our world. Now that we have no paths to carve, or civilization to create from chaos or even a place to succeed where others die, some men are floundering. 1800s you kept your women and children from harm, made sure your children lived to adulthood, made enough money to keep everyone fed and you were dubbed successful. If there was not a solid man around, you did not get any of those things.

I would watch in this order - Rio Bravo, El Dorado, McLintock and then The Cowboys. I think they are all on Play Store and iTunes.

There are a lot of good male relationship, and male-female relationship, examples in each.

forgot a scene in Operation Pacific. A good movie by the way. The female love interest is giving The Duke the usual "you aren't worshiping me right" attitude and The Duke has this look on his face that says the while he really does want this oneitus, she is to much trouble and walks away. One of her fellow nurses flat out tells her how dumb she is and how she is a spoiled brat. It is another scene that seems like science fiction in today's world. Like the other nurse is some stepford wife that a man programmed in order to be happy. But they existed in nature once. I think.
