My boyfriend took me on a ghost tour in Old Town Alexandria the other night and it was really really nice. I'm not sure if I believe in ghosts but hearing about the people and stories that happened back in the colonial era makes the history of the place that much more relatable and seem a lot more significant.

What really tripped me up are that all of the slaves/poor people were buried in mass graves which are now grass lots and parking lots. No markers or anything.

There are also a couple of places that have been featured on the history channel (and that PBS show Mercy Street) and some of the more haunted places haven't been able to hold down business/residents for more than a couple of years so it really makes you wonder. Also our tour guide had some pretty convincing photos on his cell phone that he showed us, which really added to the experience, even if they were fake.

I'll share one of the stories from the tour:

At one of the taverns (Il Porto), sailors used to stop in after their months long expeditions to bathe and have a night with one of the women. There was this one really beautiful exotic/redhaired girl named Mary and the lady who managed her always warned her to never leave the tavern unattended. She was kind of the big money maker so they were very protective. Well one night this good looking sailor comes in and meets Mary. They have a really nice night and he asks to take her out for a stroll. She decides to go and tells everyone she'll be back in an hour. After a few hours, they go looking for her and find her stabbed to death right in front of the ice house, which is also where the town stored their dead people before their funerals (because it was cold). Mary's body had contaminated the ice, but the ice guy decided he wasn't going to let some murder ruin his batch of ice, so he sold it to the pubs and stuff anyway, which went on to serve the ice. Anyway once the people caught on, they kicked the ice guy out of town, but that didn't stop some people from still serving it in drinks. I guess there were a few newspaper articles about it, too.

Oh and I guess some people see Mary's ghost on the street between the Tavern and the ice house or in the windows of the tavern sometimes. Other people report going to that tavern and feeling like someone is pulling on their hair. She also likes to flicker the lights and have fun. But I was more scared of the contaminated ice!

When I was 19 my then-bf and I drove about an hour from our college town to housesit for his parents. From the moment we went to their house, I was just uneasy. I'd been to their house in the past, but they had just moved and it was my first night in new house.

We have a vaguely odd evening (nothing specific) and head to bed. The way the house was, you entered front door and looked down a long hallway. Doors on each side had bedrooms/closests/etc, and door at end was his parents bedroom. So from his parents bed (where we were sleeping), you could look all the way down the hall and see the front door. Eerie to say the least.

I'll admit I'm easily spooked, but I was sitting on edge of the bed waiting for bf to find us blankets...and I was really scared for no reason. I kept looking from the hallway to the bathroom to the attached bonus in-room den area and my head couldn't move fast enough to keep checking them all. Finally bf comes in and we go to sleep.

Not a few hours later he starts screaming in his sleep, which he had never done. I wake up and immediately shake him awake. The moment he comes too he's still screaming "did you hear that?!?" And the more I assure him I heard nothing the less well he looked. Finally he shakes it off and we go back to sleep.

Not too much longer later, same thing. Horrible screaming and I desperately shake him awake. This time he's looking around the room like a crazy person and talking to himself. Again, I assure him I didn't see or hear anything. He honestly looked like he was about to cry. He puts the blankets over his head and goes back to bed.

Again, he begins screaming and this time when I woke him up he seemed already mostly awake and just defeatedly buried the head in the pillow.

After that I slept through the night without incident.

We wake up in the morning and I ask him about it, he looks ill and shakes his head. I'm surprised it was so bad that he didn't want to talk about it, but then he says "not here" and gets silent.

We leave to run errands and the moment we pull away he starts babbling.

I couldn't tell you in there...I just knew..it would know, I don't know I'm sorry. Right after I fell asleep someone started banging on the front door. It got harder until I was sure they would break it in...and then they did. Stomping footsteps came down the hall and I heard them slam every single door open. It was looking for us and I knew it. It stomped all the way down the hall and then stopped outside our door for ages. I prayed it would just leave but then it swung the bedroom door open. That's when you woke me up. And the bedroom door was still closed but I knew it wasn't a dream.

The moment I fell back asleep it started again. I heard it slowly pacing around our bed, and it paused by you. I was sure it would hurt you. But then it sounded as if it inhumanly sprinted around and suddenly it was by my head whispering. But not just one voice, dozens of voice whispering different languages in my ear. It was horrible. That's when you woke me up again.

It kept doing this to me all night - it felt malicious. It wanted to hurt us and it was torturing me. I woke up every few moments all night. It kept me up on purpose and didn't let me sleep. The moment the sunrise broke the horizon I felt a peace and could tell it had gone. I slept through the night immediately after that moment.

We didn't spend another night there. No explanation but that was horrifying and my ex was not a dramatic or superstitious person. It was alarming to see him so disturbed.

Lady in Black

The most famous ghost of the Harbor is the Lady in Black at Fort Warren, seven miles out to sea on George’s Island. Legend has it that in 1862, Mrs. Melanie Lanier came to the fort from South Carolina to rescue her husband, a confederate soldier, who was being held prisoner there. She snuck and lied her way into the prison and managed to rescue her husband and the others imprisoned there. Unfortunately for Melanie Lanier they were apprehended. She fired at the nearest guard, but the archaic weapon backfired in her hand.

A piece of shrapnel from the explosion lodged itself in her husband’s head, and therefore Melanie Lanier had accidentally killed her own husband in her effort to rescue him. She was then tried and hung in a black robe as a traitor on George’s Island on February 2, 1862. It is in this black robe that she is still seen to this day in various ways about Fort Warren and George’s Island as a whole.

Boston has a long violent history and so there are a lot of stories about haunting and ghosts all around. They have tours of this stuff too.

Ooooh! I love paranormal stuff, this is totally my jam.

So I don't know of any paranormal lore or anything like that about where I live now, but I spent the majority of my life near Alton, IL - the (disputed) most haunted city in America.

Background: Alton was home to a prison for confederate soldiers during the Civil War. The prison conditions were terrible, and disease was rampant - typhoid especially. Many prisoners died in there - at one point a smallpox epidemic broke, and many infected prisoners were evacuated out to an island in the middle of the Mississippi. Many were buried there.

After the war, the prison was mostly dismantled and the giant limestone blocks were reused as foundation bricks for many of the beautiful, grand homes in the city. All that remains of the prison today is a corner of the yard. Supposedly because of the trauma attached to these huge limestone bricks, any homes built with them reported paranormal activity. One of the most notable places is the McPike Mansion, which has fallen into disrepair and is not open to the public anymore, but I did get to take a tour of it and it is pretty creepy. Another very haunted place in Alton is the Mineral Springs Hotel. This was originally an ice mill, but after springs were discovered underground, it was turned into a luxury hotel with spas that were touted for their medicinal qualities. During the history of this hotel, there were a few deaths, including a woman who was shot and found floating in the pool and a woman who fell down the grand staircase and died. It's now an antique mall and event space - it's really quite beautiful. Going underground in the place definitely raises the hair on your arms.

Alton is right across the river from St. Louis, where I later lived. The Lemp mansion and brewery are famously haunted due to a long history of tragedy in the mansion. The family fell on hard times several times throughout history, and suicide seemed to run in the family. The catacombs under the brewery are SUPER creepy. I went to a murder mystery dinner theater at the mansion and had a very creepy experience in the bathroom. It was huge and luxurious. While I was using the restroom, the lights kept dimming randomly. I explored the admittedly huge bathroom when I was done but it looked like all the electric was up to date so I couldn't figure it out. When I went to leave, I unlocked the door and it would not budge. Not like a stuck latch, but like the door wouldn't even shake and the handle wouldn't rattle. It felt really cold suddenly and I started to get scared. I took my hands off the knob and sat on the settee contemplating texting my ex, but I was just pretty freaked out. The cold went away suddenly and I tried the door again and it let me out just fine. I told everyone at the table about it because it was so cool to me that I had a potentially paranormal experience at this famously haunted place.

I absolutely love paranormal stuff.

My partners family is highly superstitious. Last time I was there I let a mirror fall. Completely by chance I broke my makeup - mirror. Chaos ensued. That night my partners mother dreamed she was a rotting corpse. I slept soundly.

In my hometown exists a house where 5 old women were living. they were all born around 1920. when they died nothing had changed in said house. It still had loos on the corridors, cables that were from the 50s and they amassed an ungodly amount of cloth. The students that were prepared to rent there stayed for 5 nights and fled. They complained about flying curtains, slamming doors and creaking pavement.

I have a really hard time watching possession movies! No real-life reason, they just freak me out.

I grew up on a family property that also had the original house on it, circa 18th century. We kids made up soooo many ghost stories based on that house, and loved to play in it. It was even filled with most of the original furniture and fixings! There was a super narrow staircase to get to the upper floor, which was basically a one-room attic with a V-shaped ceiling. Along the edges of the room were these little pocket doors that opened to storage areas you could crawl in, if you were kid-sized. We would joke that the caskets used to be stored there. And out in the yard, there was a creepy storage cellar. The door was just a grass-covered piece of wood on the ground. Pull it up via an iron ring, and there was an 8 x 10 or so room dug out of the dirt. The ladder to get down was built into the dirt, as were the shelves where they used to store food back then. We pretty much never went in there unless dared to!
