As an example, you mentioned some perfume in the OP. If you wanted to give a perfume and framed as amusing yourself instead of trying to please her, you would find a perfume you liked and give her the perfume YOU like instead of the one she likes. And tell her 'I like this one/I want you to wear this and smell good for me'. She's gonna eat it up. Applies for clothes/sexy underwear too.

When you give her something that YOU like, you are both leading and giving her a chance to qualify herself to you by wearing it, and giving her queues as to what kind of stuff you like so she can better please you in the future. Just don't splurge on it, and give sparingly.

I saw some Valentines ad on TV the other day. Forgot what the company was but it featured some 4/10 at best girl and some dude in high school flirting with each other, and the guy goes out and buys all this shit for the girl and puts it in her locker, plus has more to hand her after she sees all thats in her locker.

In other words, don't be that guy. But that commercial is the exact kind of brainwashing and programming that young men receive and think that is the way to get a girl.

You shouldn't go with (only) Skittles, because at the end of the day your girl and her girlfriends will compare the valentine D they got, and if your girl comes out short, she will resent you for that. Of curse if you go all beta, she will resent you even more. Possible present #1 is something thoughtful, so she is happy regardless what her girls got. Possible present #2 is to do something exciting, so she "wins valentine". Obligatory: Don't spend to much $ and time - My present cost me zero bucks and two very fun hours. And of curse fuck her plenty.
