I have kept a journal sporadically over the decades, and every so often I read it and cringe, not merely over my former betaness, but also over my immaturity. I've come far, but more importantly I can see exactly what my basic problems were. A journal is like a patient friend who gently reminds you of your faults so that you can work on correcting them without shame.

A journal keeps you honest. It gets you out of bed simply so you will have something to write down by the end of the day.

Yes; and another nice thing about journaling is that it's flexible, the author defines its purpose and its schedule. Daily journaling is a praiseworthy discipline, it gets you thinking about your day, it provokes a recollective mindset, and that spills over into your daily life, you stop doing stupid things, and you start doing smart things.

Unscheduled on-demand journaling, like in my case, affords you the opportunity to reflect on your own fuck-ups - I mostly journaled about situations that left me feeling hurt - and the learning comes when you go back after a month or a year and read about your former loser self struggling in the dark without a sense of the bigger picture.

I'm a serious Catholic, and we have Confession, and I'm telling you, that admitting your faults to another human being is a humbling and edifying experience. It's all too easy to allow one's personal hamster to spin one's own faults. Journaling helps keep things objective.

One thing I recommend is rating every day out of 10. Shows trends in your actions and how they reflect on your outlook of the day.

I just started this a month ago on my phone with the evernote app. Was a great decision.

Be mindful that your Evernote data is stored off-site, out of your direct control and can be easily compromised.

Yep I don't put anything in there that would ruin my life if discovered. Nice thing is it can sync to my computer as well.

How modern. Personally I use those sewn-binding "Composition" books you get at the drug store, with the blotchy cardboard covers.

And now the scent of ballpoint pen ink makes me introspective.

I started that way too, but I like the convenience of being able to write wherever I am without having to bring a physical journal.

Also you can add pictures or videos which is pretty cool.

Oprah recommends keeping a journal. Nuff said.

If you have hypergraphia (compulsion to write), a journal is as good as anything else. If you are solo navigating around the world, a journal would be worthwhile. If you are playing X-box and blazing cones, your mental ruminations are not worth the trees.

If you are playing X-box and blazing cones

Might make you start to realize how worthless your life is in that scenario.

Being a self-help board, would someone like that even be on here?

Another benefit is that it can be used as evidence in court, at least in some European countries. Maybe in the US as well?

I keep a journal for the sole purpose of being able to compare my thought patterns between present me and 10-years-later me

[–]kempff[S] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, that's what I was talking about in my responses elsewhere in this thread.

How far have you come, /u/wheyapartment?

[–]1independentmale1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I began keeping a journal toward the end of my marriage. Too many times, my wife would pull some crazy shit and I would think, "Didn't we just go through this?" So I downloaded a basic password protected diary app and started jotting down notes. Every time she went crazy, I put a red mark on the date with a brief explanation.

It took some time but within a few months, the patterns I suspected began to emerge. I could clearly see her behavior cycles and I was finally able to realize that, yes, she truly was crazy as fuck and there was nothing wrong with me. (She was very, very good at convincing me that all of her problems were my fault. The journal answered that question clearly.)

There was another great benefit I didn't anticipate: After I divorced her, there were times when I would miss her. See, we tend to remember the good times and not the bad. It was especially hard for me when she would text me long diatribes about how much she loves and misses me and so on. This would evoke feelings for her and the knowledge that with a single word I could have her back was rough.

One look at those journal entries quickly eliminated that nonsense. I'd read just a bit and nope the fuck right out of whatever feelings I thought I had for her.

This.

I was in an emotionally abusive LTR for a number of years and my gerbil and her hamster cooperated seamlessly like Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. I was in denial, etc. etc. and she made me doubt my own perception of the abuse.

I hung a large-format desk calendar on the kitchen wall in full view and filled in brief descriptions of the given day's insane conflicts, which she had a mysterious habit of not remembering.

I must say the pattern was interesting. No, it wasn't that notorious "one weekend a month" pattern; the abuse was coordinated with how she felt about herself as a result of something happening at her work on a given day, and she would come home and take it out on me. But even more interesting, was that the outburts of irrational rage were also coordinated with ... if you'll pardon me ... her bowel movements! She was poop-shy and wouldn't go at work, so she held it in until she got home!

Sadly, though, not even documenting the endless Balrog routines was enough to get me to solve the problem once and for all and just 86 the relationship. Because of this, I say that while journaling is of great value, knowledge must be reduced to action if any change is going to happen.

[–]jack3d--1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

That's definitely my favorite thing about keeping a journal so far, being able to detect patterns you might not have noticed before.
