A professor told me never to pay for your own graduate school. Your job, the school, or even private scholarships will pay your way. If you can get Germany to do it, go for it. I got a job as a research assistant where I did 20 hours of work at $20/hour and a tuition waiver pretty easily in the states, I only had a 3.25 from my BS.

I was more looking into the study abroad aspect of it because I never had the opportunity to do that while in college

Fluency in German might be a bit of an obstacle.

As /u/usul1628 says, you shouldn't have to pay full price for grad school in the US. STEM majors are typically free in exchange for TA/laboratory duties. Outside of STEM, I have no idea, but from the general opinion of reddit, you might want to rethink a grad degree in non technical fields.

Right now I'm working in highly specialized IT field as a senior associate. If I got an MBA then I would be on a clear path to senior management. Took 5 years of german in HS so I wouldn't be completely lost.

It might make sense for you, it might not. MBA degrees can be had quickly and cheaply in the US via online or local programs, so if you are looking for a 'check box' on your CV, that can be done pretty cheaply and easily.

The real value of an MBA is the networking connections you get while in the program. If you are not planning on a relocation to Germany for a career, some of those benefits will be lost.

And that is my point. An MBA's connections a world away from where you actually intend to work provide a similar benefit to a cheap MBA. Sure the world is getting quite a bit smaller, but not that small.

Just take a long vacation and live over there for a month, it's way cheaper and you don't have to bother wasting your time with classes.

Not my realm of experience, but at all of the universities I have experience with, tuition waivers are routinely given to physics grad students in the US, along with ample opportunity for TA positions to round out your (meager) budget. This is how I got my degree(s) 15 or so years ago, although things might have changed.

Why add another variable (language) to your plate if not fluent? Grad school was tough enough as it is without that pressure.

Mostly cause I work in a lab with other Grad Students and one has told me that he regrets not picking based on where he wants to live. I would love to live in Germany and have only been there once for a 6 week stay and loved it. Since I am familiar enough with the language i just think it would be interesting and a new experience. Also I was aware of that in the US

That's a different issue, yeah if that is where you want to emigrate to, than go for it! It is actually preferable to get your education in the general area of where you want to work (connections, employers familiar with your education, etc) Make sure before you embark on this that it is actually possible to gain residence/get a work permit/etc.

This is why I commented to the OP, once you go overseas for a degree, companies back stateside may not see this as a benefit, since they are unfamiliar with the unis in another country.

Reputable PhD's are always free regardless of subject because you work for the school as a teacher and researcher.

That has always been my assumption, I just wasn't sure outside of STEM subjects where a student's work/study is deemed more valuable.

I had actually planned on interning for a company in Germany after a study abroad before my collegiate career went to shit. This is actually really really interesting since I'm about do to return to school.

The school would pay.

For example, my friend studies computer science. She pays tuition. She pays a reduced rate for housing. She also works as a TA. Her compensation as a TA is greater than the cost of her tuition and housing.

I have a similar offer that will mature in the fall of 2015. I would be compensated for doing research in a lab.

You don't seem to understand.

In the United States, if you are pursuing a STEM degree, you will not have to pay a net positive sum of American dollars.

Your compensation will exceed the cost of your tuition and housing and food.

I'm at $100k topping out at $120k without becoming a manager. Managers can make up to $175k.

It's possible to become a manager w/o MBA but having it on resume makes it much easier. I was interested more in the fact that I never studied abroad and it sounds like it could be fun, with a side bonus of free MBA.

I was more curious about the study abroad aspect of it. I'd rather die poor with a life of memories than die rich having spent my life in a cubicle
