Game of Thrones is a fictional TV series where one of the most popular major characters is a midget, the three biggest, strongest, whitest, manly men in the series were sequentially killed off (two in the very first season), leaving behind two daughters and a cripple all of who have been extremely successful in their own ways, two women rose up from lifetimes of being servile, dominated and sexually abused to a positions of respect, power and command over thousands, every non-white foreigner character is portrayed as downright cool compared to the whiteys, and a pudgy nerdy cowardly guy is the only one in the series to date who's killed one of those legendary white walkers.

If you cherry-pick the right parts from a diverse and content-rich television series, it sounds downright pro-woman, pro-minority, anti-man, anti-white.

Daenerys is practically a feminist Mary-Sue. She gets sold to a barbarian for sex by her brother, then her barbarian husband dies and so does her brother. She inherits the Dothraki army and becomes mother of dragons for doing fuck-all. She has a team of advisors who swear their lives to her and make sure she doesn't fuck up but she still get's to make all the epic speeches as if she had actually done all the work.

The show is non-stop slaughter, all too often the slaughter of males, nobody blinks an eye. How many hundreds if not thousands of men died from immolation at Blackwater? Don't recall seeing a single posting criticizing the show over it.

Show a rape scene and the Internet goes insane.

I am not a big fan of GoT, and have stopped watching it, but i have to hand it to the makers, they troll the shit of almost everyone in their target group. After an episode of women getting brutally fucked and conspiring the shit out of men (i.e. women being typical women), they 'd throw an episode with a gay king, so nobody can blame them for not being liberal enough.

It's good if women don't like it, and it's even better that it's so popular that they won't be able to shut it down or get HBO's CEO fired.

[–]ColdEiric 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So? Some men are expendable. Game of Thrones shows that some women are also expendable.

She should continue to watch, and notice which men and women are not. But of course, I forgot, she's a feminist, and I shouldn't expect that loud children understand anything.

[–]1PaulRivers10 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This woman who complains is the perfect example of feminist thinking.

Every character on the show - the men moreso than the women - get fucked over again. And again. And again. And again. Ned Stark's entire guard is murdered, then Ned Stark has his head cut off. Rob Stark and his entire family are brutually betrayed and murdered later.

The Game of Thrones universe is a place where horrible, dark triad characters are constantly in charge, and everyone gets completely fucked over. There's at least 3 men killed or horribly horribly brutalized for every woman who's killed or brutalized.

And what's a feminists conclusion from watching? "I'm exhausted by the triumph of men at the expense of women."

That is just how feminism operates - 3 men can get brutally murdered, then 1 woman gets raped - and their description is that men are triumphing at the expense of women.

Yep... tell the author what his works may be and what he cannot create...

[–]Ironhigh 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

A show where you have this being called sexist, what the fuck.

No show is immune to this kind of blind feminist attacks. They'll cherry pick whatever the fuck they feel like.

[–]39andNotFine 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm a person of color. Here is what I say to this feminist. Stop whining. If you want more shows that have more people of color and more women, go out and make them. Be the change you want to see in the world. Don't moan that other successful people should have to change for you.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (20 children) | Copy Link

I don't blame her for not liking that show; I agree with her on the racism aspect of the Dani Targaryen storyline, not that I think it was meant to make a racist statement per se, but if I were black, I would feel very uncomfortable watching the white "liberator" re-enslave the slaves by liberating them so that they'll follow her for a slightly better deal than what they had under their old masters.

On the other hand, the whole point of the show is to depict brutal realities that people have faced historically. What's the point of sugar-coating everything, when reality is ugly? It's worse, in my mind to pretend that what happens on the show never happened historically.

Also, where's the sympathy for all the boys and men who get slaughtered left and right on every battle? No sympathy for the Lannister cousin who died in vain so Jaime could try and escape? No outrage at Bran getting crippled? Every single on that show is brutalized at every turn, and yet people only notice it when it happens to someone that looks like them. Even, Joffrey isn't really a villain in my mind, he's just a weak, scared, adolescent with a bad upbringing, who uses viciousness as his only weapon because he's scared shitless at all the powerful people around him that could kill him at any moment.

Re-enslave? didn't they become free...

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

L. Ron Hubbard has a great quote on that:

"If you really want to enslave people give them total freedom."

I remember it differently though:

"If you really want to enslave people, tell them you're going to set them free."

They follow her for the promise of a better material existence, and out of gratitude for "liberating" them, but they still follow her and do what she tells them. They are her de facto slaves. They work for her interests. What would free people have done had she liberated them? They would have all walked off and done their own thing. That's why I thought that scene was sad. They were enslaved, then suddenly she frees them, and then they voluntarily, but reflexively agree to work for her. They don't know anything else but to follow orders.

Well, what you are describing in the first instance is known as "chattel" slavery, where people are owned treated like cattle or other pieces of property.

The Yankee capitalists and the British came up with a superior method of control that allows people to rise and fall to some degree on their merits, if they can think their way out of all the psychological prisons they are placed in when they are sent into the school system to be indoctrinated into obedient robots.

I had the same epiphany numerous times, but was too weak-willed by that point to act on it. That's the worst part. All the being told what to do all the time destroys your will to act for yourself until you almost forget how to do it. Plus, you are constantly being gaslighted by everyone older than you at every turn, constantly making it seem like YOU are the problem, when really it's the horribly oppressive system they've designed to "mold" you.

Read John Taylor Gatto for more; his works are available for free online, but I wouldn't mention him if what he writes didn't jibe with my own experience.

Lololololololol. It's WAY more complicated than that. In the series, the warrior slaves were raised knowing nothing other than slavery. They have a slave culture. They have slave minds. They have to free their minds in order to free their bodies, but that takes time, effort, and a free culture. All Targaryen did was manipulate them into being her slaves under the guise of liberation by killing their masters and demonstrating a superiority of force, as well as using rhetoric. Now they follow her . . . because they are slaves.

[–]WAFC 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Each time she has asked freed slaves to follow her, some of them have left and she did nothing to stop them. They are free to leave whenever they want.

You want to talk about slaves, you should look to the Night's Watch.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But in all seriousness; the Night's Watch is an excellent satire of the Clergy, the Military, and the Prison system all rolled into one.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ah, I didn't know about that last bit.

But, the Night's Watch aren't slaves, they are bruthuhs of the Noiight's Wotch, and they foight fah juhstiss!

Well, I would argue that since they were never truly free in their minds, they reflexively joined her again out of the slave mindset. But someone else commented that some of them peeled off and did their own thing at certain points.

"The first step to the knowledge of the wonder and mystery of life is the recognition of the monstrous nature of the earthly human realm as well as its glory, the realization that this is just how it is and that it cannot and will not be changed. Those who think they know how the universe could have been had they created it, without pain, without sorrow, without time, without death, are unfit for illumination"

Well, you are more free in the sense that you can choose creditors, employers, and you can use free time to enhance your market value until you build up enough capital to employ your own slaves.

They are not women. They are boys, they are supposed to take it and to bring the bacon.

I'm not going to save you from downvotes, but I'll let you know it's not me.

In any case, I think they've taken away too much. There's a lot of context missed about Tyrion in the first season (they eventually clue you in to his dislike for his family), and some things are missed with Catelyn's journey to the Eyrie.

The things they've added are things that clarify stuff that people have said are unclear in the books. Like people speculated that Rob's wife lived with his baby and in the show, that bitch (and baby) is dead.

Season 4 has been boring. The previous seasons I think are the best TV I've ever seen. Going back and watching them knowing more about the characters is interesting too.
