It's difficult to parse exactly what is meant here by 'vulnerable.' If this is referring to risk-taking, then I agree. Betas are typically averse to taking risks. They don't approach the woman they want for fear of rejection. They don't sexually escalate with a woman because of fear of rejection.

However, if this is referring to emotional investment, then I disagree. In a way, a guy is making himself vulnerable by approaching a woman, but, for example, if he says the same exact thing to every woman, he is less vulnerable in terms of emotional investment.

Less emotional investment at the start of an interaction is a good thing, contrary to popular opinion. Ideally, a guy should have very little emotional investment in a woman until they have spent some quality time together and she has shown her worth. Even then, if the guy demonstrates too much emotional investment, he comes across as needy.

I used to believe that guys needed a deep connection to a woman for her to be into him, that he needed to find something unique in her and make her feel special. I no longer believe this. I now believe it's more important that he demonstrate his capacity for deeper emotions in one way or another, through storytelling, etc. He needs to be able to listen to her and understand her, but not necessarily become emotionally invested in her early on.

Semantics aside, your answer doesn't address the content of my point at all.

Different roads entirely...

because I have known numerous people in my life who would be seen as 'Beta' by some but the complexity and productivity (relative to my values) far surpasses people who many people consider Alpha. The skinny "weak" and unassertive man may have a brilliant creative mind, for example, which bestows priceless things unto his own experience and that of others. We have seen this in larger cultural shifts in the past 20 years, for example, where people who were passive and had hidden analytical talents--- nerds you might say --- have risen to take the lead in driving so much of our economic progress. But these personality types were 'losers' to so many self-described 'Alphas.'

This is The Red Pill. You can lift heavy and abuse vulnerable women, or GTFO.

I hope this is sarcasm, if not, it's still hilarious, but probably not the way you intend.

Are you mark Manson? I am a big fan of you, if so. I also know Keith, If you know who I'm talking about.

Keith is one of us, but not a guru or producer of content like mark. We were starting a podcast on game at one point, but that fizzled out.

Great article.

I am coming around to feeling that there is something really mechanical and one-dimensional (and dare I say 'phony' ) about even the whole idea of parsing people into 'Beta's and 'Alphas'.

The masses always simplify ideas into black and white or in this case red pill and blue pill so their tiny minds can understand them. Now they have become just like the feminists they are demonizing.

Vulnerability can be taken on another level. If something is too perfect you will become suspicious. While if you intentionally allow a flaw to show, people will see that flaw and then stop looking for more flaws.

The author is indeed referring to risk-taking as opposed to emotional investment.

Great article. You need to be comfortable enough with yourself such that showing a little vulnerability is no big deal. The fake alphas are the clowns who cover up their fear and insecurities with arrogance and bravado.

[–]humanspace 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I'd relate the fake alphas to the guys that try to be 'in charge' of the unimportant things. The loud ones that attract early attention but crumble when tested. In my experience, if you are a true leader, you don't usually have to assert yourself to take charge. You just are naturally in charge, the fake alphas hand the reigns over without hesitation when things get dangerous.

Me? I'm just a regular kinda guy...with a big ass dick.

But frankly, since this is anonymous, I'll risk a bit of hubris and say yes.

What happened to fake it until u make it though?

[–]JohnGalt316 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

this is the difference between theory and practice

a fake alpha writes about theory on his blog

a true alpha realizes that acting vulnerable doesn't get him what he wants and adjusts accordingly

I like MM's overall vulnerability theory, though I haven't read his book yet. He might state this in fuller detail, but I don't believe you should be eager to offer vulnerability, but be comfortable with doing so, as well as knowing which types of vulnerability to deploy in certain situations.

Situation A: You're playing darts with a girl you just met at a bar. She brings up astrology. You give her a long, concerned look, thus leaving your real opinion that it's BS out in the open. She laughs at your exaggerated expression and starts hamstering. You're vulnerable and attractive.

Other way to handle it: she brings up astrology, asks you your sign. You say Leo. She mentions that Leos have some generic human trait like "passionate". You mention how you're surprised that actually might be true, cause you've been a romantic in prior relationships and you've had your heart broken. Drywall lines her uterus and after a minute she excuses herself to the other side of the bar. You're vulnerable and unattractive.

Situation B: you're cuddling after taking her to poundtown. She hints that she's been abused. You're skeptical and ask her questions without masking your skepticism. She gets defensive and very angry. She puts her clothes back on and asks you to leave. You're vulnerable and, as "alpha" as the above may sound, you're unattractive.

Other way to handle it: You're skeptical, but you're not vulnerable with your skepticism in the moment. You say nothing while physically comforting her, let a few moments of silence pass, and change the subject to the weird freckle on her undertit you just noticed, and show her your weird-ass birthmark on your thigh and tell her about how your friends give you shit for it. She laughs. You're vulnerable--not as vulnerable as her and not as vulnerable with your opinion as you could be--and attractive.

Situational awareness is an art that every man must develop.
