Just because the show relies on archetypes doesn't mean it was meant for grown "men", most fiction uses archetypes to some extent and shows for children probably moreso. Also the cast is mostly female and single because its intended audience (5 year old girls) is also female and single. I can understand attraction towards a certain archetype might be part of the reason why Bronies like the show, but really, liking nerdy girls alone won't make you start jerking off to a children's cartoon.

jerking off to a children's cartoon

Well that escalated quickly.

[–]KJL13 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah well /r/ClopClop exists so it's not like that statement isn't based in reality.

[–]BioGenx2b 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

His statements implies that all bronies clop, more specifically that they clop to the original versions of these characters. If you don't know what I mean, look up my_little_pony on Gelbooru.com. I think SuicideGirls did some MLP stuff too.

I'll speak for 90% of the men here and say we didn't need an article to tell us that.

[–]Johnny_Shades 4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It'd be safe to say 99% of the men here.

[–]GrantNexus 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Lots of new folks- I estimated conservatively, and reddit is full of bronies.

[–]Evers89 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Low hanging fruit article by RoK. Some of their shit isn't all that great. Seems try hard here.

I do like that the general consensus is along the "we know" side of the fence with this shit.

Sometimes I wonder whether those who really need to pick on the lowest rank of losers have serious insecurity problems themselves.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Came here to post this.

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points16 points 12 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Bah. What's hilarious to me is the hypocrisy of the people who condemn these man-children . . . yet engage in equally childish, yet more socially acceptable pursuits. Bronyism is merely Winger to kitsch culture's Metallica: something it point the finger at and say: "That's sooooooooo uncool! Say, what are you going to cosplay as at the next Anime convention?"

I had a friend in high school who was probably one of the most hard core people at the school . . . yet he developed an infatuation with the Power Puff Girls. This was a guy who got into actual fist fights where blood was shed, mostly other people's blood, who walked around with deep-seated rage, who was also a fucking genius and saw through all kinds of bullshit. And yet he liked that stupid cartoon with crappy animation. I never judged him for it, but found it an odd contradiction.

[–]Sunshinelorrypop 5 points6 points7 points 12 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I think it may be your friends sense of humour. Though, I didn't get into fist fights where blood was shed, I had a weird sense of humour where I'd pretend to like the teletubbies, I'd come into school late and say I was watching it (it started about 8:30am).

I never let people know that it was just a joke but several others got into it (I expect because they were joking too) and then more people did. I expect this is how my little pony because popular, except the humour has long since left. As for power puff girls, it's really not that bad of a cartoon, it had a weird sense of sarcasm throughout as though it was making fun of itself.

[–]BioGenx2b 4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

it may be your friends sense of humour

Or it may be that it was a well made show with great characters and a fun plot. PPG had a much stronger boy-friendly plot, thanks mostly to Craig McCracken and Genndy Tartakovsky I think, but MLP is right up there if you can separate some of the dissonance that comes from a couple of its themes here and there.

[–]Sunshinelorrypop 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

I honestly gave MLP a shot. I saw the hoopla and thought the only way to objectively look at it would be to view a few episodes. So I had a few people recommend me some and I really couldn't see what was so good about it other than a bunch of happy clappy feel good shit.

PPG's was pretty satirical but I really don't see what was so good about MLP.

I watched a documentary on 'bronies' and really felt many of them were not really interested in the show other than to prove they were the biggest fanboy. I mean, the creators of MLP brought out a MLP beat-em-up computer game. Now to me a beat-em-up is completely contradictory to the message of the show. Surly they could have made a game about sharing, love and friendship which I saw as key tenants, yet the bronies were like "Please, take my money!" If they were truly influenced by the show, I'd have thought the game would have been a massive disappointment/insult to the community. The documentary also displayed the creators complete contempt for bronies and saw them no more as another revenue of hawking merchandise, a niche which no other children show really has at the moment.

[–]BioGenx2b 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The problem with the documentary was that people don't realize we're talking about obsessive people who were going to fill their lives with merchandise of one kind or another, whether it be ponies or bishoujo figurines. You're right that MLP itself is probably not the point for them as much as being able to attach to something popular and feel like they've achieve something. I don't know if all they need is a healthy dose of self-esteem, but I feel like it's a good start.

As for the appeal of the show, someone else mentioned this: the characters all have personalities exaggerated enough to be eccentric, so there's an archetype for everyone to enjoy. At first glance, it's all ponies and friendship and hugs or whatever, but then you start identifying with one character or another. Or maybe you just can't stop laughing at Pinkie Pie because she's fucking crazy, or the sly references to pop culture slipped into some of the episodes. PPG does this too, though you're right that they appear more outwardly satirical, and MLP is far more preachy (moral resolution every episode, no permanent grudge whatsoever).

Where fighting games are concerned, that's just the nature of fandom. It's a common staple for popular anime to get a fighting game, fan-made or otherwise. Making sense isn't a requirement. For example, check out Armjoe, a fighting game based on Les Miserables that came completely out of nowhere. On one hand, it's more shit to buy. On the other hand, for those of us who are far more centered, there's hype to be had. (I haven't seen this beat-em-up yet, but I'll check it out later today.)

[–]Sunshinelorrypop 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This doesn't surprise me that the doc followed the most obsessive. It's just entertainment afterall.

I still don't buy into the beatemup reasoning. I'm idealistic and stubborn.

[–]BioGenx2b 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Maybe I should've referenced the plethora of girl-themed fighting games coming out of Japan. Maribato, Glove-On Fight, and Asuka 120% are a good start. It's a tradition. MLP uses the same successful formula that anime has been using for the last few decades, so it's no surprise to me at all.

When I was young being nerdy meant you are actually smart? Programming on the computer, reading sci-fi and science... this new phenomenon of nerds with the intellectual needs of an average houseplant is hard for me to parse.

How... do men... get nerdy without... being smart? As far as I know the nerdy loserdom comes from being preoccupied intellectual interests which means the boy does not go outside to wrestle with the other boys, climb trees and challenge each others courage, and thus by not practicing this manly stuff the T production just does not kick in - delayed onset puberty, even starting to shave later than others, and so on.

But... if I was as dumb as to actually enjoy MLP instead of trying to make sense of SuSE Linux 6.1 in 1997 (the horror, the horror) why wouldn't I just be a normal guy who is into spectator sports, fighting, action movies, cars, and later girls, thus developing a normal masculine attitude?

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I get the drift of this article, and agree that these people are low value, bottom of the barrel males. It's preaching to the choir. I'm personally not a fan of kicking people when their down.

These guys are so low value, that they are not a threat to people here that are putting in hard work towards self improvement and life, and ultimately getting women to join in as a result. 'Bronies' are insignificant, and for all intents and purposes null and void, unless they see shrinks, hit the gym, dress better, get interesting & productive hobbies, make friends and study some game, all in that order.

You missed the whole point of the article actually. The point is that the "brony" subculture is becoming part of the cultural redefinition of masculinity.

Exposure≠Being part of the cultural redefinition of masculinity.

Virtually all of my friends are what I would consider progressive/left leaning (I also have few friends on the right as well too) look at 'Bronies' with the same amount of scorn and disgust as we do, despite not caring about the RP, or anything we talk about here.

'Bronies' exposure isn't anywhere close to changing definitions of masculinity. Most folks I know, as well as myself wouldn't want anything to do with guys like this, and don't consider it masculine at all.

*Left-leaning

MLP fans are weirdos.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Id like to see them explain equestria girls.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That was actually covered in a RoK article a while back. I can't remember when, you'd have to look that up.

[–]HeadingRed 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sandwiched between the furries and anime addicts liveth the brony.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Just don't make it an obsession and watch the show. Applies to any other show.

[–]BioGenx2b 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Watch many shows, buy nothing, can confirm.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No shit

[+]Saluta -6 points-5 points-4 points 12 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

These men should be castrated.

[–]theVet 10 points11 points12 points 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I don't think we have to worry about them creating offspring.

[–]Saluta -5 points-4 points-3 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I want to castrate them just to hear them scream, they are weak, they belong to the strong.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

What the fuck dude

[–]SeekingAlpha -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Don't worry, he's on the "shoot on-site" list.

Half of r/TheRedPill probably is for that matter...it's just good strategy, afterall. TPTB need to minimize any threat to their dominance and awakened men are a prime threat.

[–]Saluta -5 points-4 points-3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm sorry I though this was the redpill, a place for men

My Little Gelding

[–]SeekingAlpha 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Why bother doing something to them that they've already done to themselves?

More and more, I wonder about the social/cultural effects of endocrine disruptors in the environment...at what point do boys with abnormal sex hormone development become susceptible to Bronieism and the like? A taboo topic, to say the least.

[–]Saluta -2 points-1 points0 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

They already cut their own balls off? No, they haven't. I just think it would be fun to make these nerd cry and then bleed to death. Stop trying to philosophize, some time fun and pleasure are as simple as a iron bar and a loser kid

[–]SeekingAlpha -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I was thinking more along the lines of chemical castration. Of course, castration is often used to control aggressiveness/maleness and these people seem to be of absolutely no threat in that regard.

[–]Saluta -2 points-1 points0 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I dont want to castrate them to remove them from the gene pool or make them more docile. They are weak and obviously couldent resist, and it would be fun to watch something die from castration

[–]SeekingAlpha 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I believe pity is what they call the feeling that arises when reading such a sad comment.
