When an educated culture routinely denigrates masculinity and manhood, then women will be perpetually stuck with boys,

Really liked this point. It so concisely captures from whence beta-hood arises.

[–]vaker6 points7 points8 points 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I've read that sentence differently:

women will be perpetually stuck with boys, who have no incentive to mature or to honor their commitments

Isn't this just the usual shaming, and call to 'man up' and marry those post-wall spinsters?

[–]Top_Ozone3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I don't think so. It masquerades as such, but it really does point to a pressing issue.

There is a problem of a lot of men not fulfilling their potential these days. They are all too willing to just sit home, play video games, get high, and beat off to some porn. Does this hit home for you? You surely know one or more guys that fit that stereotype.

But the point gets to the heart of the issue. There is no reward structure in place to pull "boys" into "men." In older times, the journey to manhood won you a respected job with a loving wife and kids. But now? The economy is shit and woman aren't worth the effort.

It may have a subtle undertone of "man up and marry these spinsters," but that's far from the point. Read in conjunction with the rest of the article, which points out the glaring faults in modern day feminism, its merely pointing to a pressing issue in today's society.

Theres more to it than men not fulfilling their roles because they are playing video games and just getting by. Many men are afraid of confrontation and conflict, lie and play it safe by keeping to themselves. That is the nice guy or boy that most males have become.

You might be underestimating the audience of this sub.

I see what you mean, but I understand it in view of the author's overarching indictment of the feminists. I took her to be parroting the frustrations of these entitled spinsters in the purpose of mockery because they don't realize that they've done this to themselves.

Indeed, men are absolutely indispensable right now, invisible as it is to most feminists, who seem blind to the infrastructure that makes their own work lives possible. It is overwhelmingly men who do the dirty, dangerous work of building roads, pouring concrete, laying bricks, tarring roofs, hanging electric wires, excavating natural gas and sewage lines, cutting and clearing trees, and bulldozing the landscape for housing developments. It is men who heft and weld the giant steel beams that frame our office buildings, and it is men who do the hair-raising work of insetting and sealing the finely tempered plate-glass windows of skyscrapers 50 stories tall.

At least one woman recognizes that women moved into the workforce, competing for authority, power, and money but left the dangerous and vital work for men alone. I wish she would have included a stat about workplace deaths being to show the absurdity of workplace equality. Occupational Fatality.

It is nice to hear an acknowledgement from a respected writer. This is all this article is though. One woman's voice against the cry of a herd of feral cats.

The patriarchy hurts men too /s (more so than women apparently)

Camille Paglia is a wonderful woman who sadly got mixed up in the feminist circle jerk that was the "monk debate"

She had a lot to say about how fucking awful that debate was.

It was essentially 5 feminists and her. And the 5 feminist just sat there beating each other off over how men were "finished"

[–]Stankmonger1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm sorry, but could you link to where I could get more information on that?

My favorite bisexual feminist. If you read a lot of her other writing, she has a lot of RP viewpoints and thinks screechy modern feminism has been a catastrophe for humanity.

These occupations will probably soon be replaced by robots. Men are important because they are overwhelmingly the entrepreneurs, the engineers and the scientists who build technology and advance the world which women enjoy.

Well that was surprising to read in Time.

[–]Kepaso6 points7 points8 points 12 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

yes it's a man's world. Look around you, all the things you see, in your house or in the street, were invented and made by men. Only men had the drive and power to manipulate the elements to create civilizations. But you know what, we men did it only for one purpose: women.

The women control the system in a different way. They are moving into positions once occupied by men, and subverting us. Hence the need for the pill.

Haven't seen it much in banking/finance...because most of those companies operate on pure numbers, not feels.

But with every divorce payout or inheritance, women are reaping what the man spent his whole life sowing. A good chunk of the world's richest women are simply women who inherited it from the real genius who earned it.

This is a mans world...but it wouldn't mean nothing without a woman or a girl.

This reads like a Red Dawn masturbation fantasy for both sides. One where men are no longer needed and the other side where if masculinity isn't preserved it will spell the end for the human race as we know it.

And neither side is producing facts beyond anecdotes.

where if masculinity isn't preserved it will spell the end for the human race as we know it.

Nope. Just the culture stupid enough to stop preserving masculinity.

"Sex and Culture" by J.D. Unwin.

ETA: Since people are asking me for a link to the book in PM: http://no-maam.blogspot.com/2008/08/online-book-sex-and-culture-by-jd-unwin.html for a review which contains a direct link to the torrent at the bottom of the article. It is a legal download, as the book is out of copyright.

[–]Babylegs_O_Houlihan-4 points-3 points-2 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Please explain how that would spell the end of the human race.

[–]Senior ContributorDemonspawn2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Read what I said.

[–]Babylegs_O_Houlihan-1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I did. That's not an explanation, just an end result. I'm not following the logic where losing masculinity would cause the end of the human race.
