Statistics surrounding sexual assault are notoriously unreliable and inconsistent, primarily because of vague and expansive definitions of what qualifies as sexual assault.

Christina Hoff Sommers of the American Enterprise Institute explains that the study often cited as the origin of the "one in five" factoid is an online survey conducted under a grant from the Justice Department. Surveyors employed such a broad definition that "'forced kissing" and even "attempted forced kissing" qualified as sexual assault.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics' "Violent Victimization of College Students" report tells a different and more plausible story about campus culture. During the years surveyed, 1995-2002, the DOJ found that there were six rapes or sexual assaults per thousand per year. Across the nation's four million female college students, that comes to about one victim in forty students.

Also in this article by Summers, she further criticizes the statistic. She notes that another "landmark study" that purported the 1 in 4 myth asked questions like:

Have you had sexual intercourse when you didn’t want to because a man gave you alcohol or drugs?

An affirmative answer was counted as rape. In other words, a women who regretted a one night stand after a night of drinking was considered as having been sexually assaulted.

This was also criticized by another professor:

What does having sex "because" a man gives you drugs or alcohol signify? A positive response does not indicate whether duress, intoxication, force, or the threat of force were present; whether the woman's judgment or control were substantially impaired; or whether the man purposefully got the woman drunk in order to prevent her resistance to sexual advances.... While the item could have been clearly worded to denote "intentional incapacitation of the victim," as the question stands it would require a mind reader to detect whether any affirmative response corresponds to this legal definition of rape

I would definitely read this second article as it's much more academic, convincing and well thought out compared to an op-ed. Also, bookmark both of these and use them in the future whenever you encounter this bullshit myth from girls or whiteknights. Or provide some enlightenment to your friends.

The statistic I always heard was "1 in 4 women have been sexually assaulted" Which can be defined as some prick getting too handsy or slapping an ass at a bar or party. In which case I can totally see that stat being true. By those standards I have been sexually assaulted numerous times.

During the pure blue pill days, I still called bullshit on this. I'm still quite liberal/progressive, but feminism now is off the charts. It's not progressive. The fringe are not moving forward in a positive way for society. I have no issue with fighting for womens' health issues, birth control, rejecting forced vaginal ultrasounds, abortion, etc. but then they go ahead and cite this 1 in 4 number!?!? Boom. Credibility lost. I'm dealing with more idiots who haven't bothered to think critically.

Christina Hoff Sommers made a critique on those surveys a while back. this is definitely worth a read, as it demonstrates how the researchers changed respondent's answers according to a warped view of of what constitutes sexual assault. the researchers were clearly trying to misrepresent the data to push an alarmist agenda.

consider this: according to the same study that produced the "1 in 4" stat, 42% of sexual assault victims (according to the researcher's definition of sexual assault) continued to have sexual relations with their attackers. did 42% college-going sexual assault or rape victims really go back to their attackers? or were the research methods ridiculously flawed? either those assaults were erroneously labeled, or nearly half of college-going women have overwhelming rape fantasies, and i don't believe that for a second.

With the feminism definition of rape it's probably true. You have to go through so much to not satisfy their definition of rape. E.g One drop of alcohol it's rape, no means no however yes may also mean no, was it an enthusiastic yes. And so on.

Rule of feminism, skew the statistics as much as possible to support radical claims.

It's just like the BS of women making less money than men. Let's ignore the correlating data showing they work less hours. Let's ignore data showing women opt for lower paying jobs, and get meaningless degrees. Oh and let's also ignore that companies are changing contracts and lowering their top rate, and we're comparing women at the bottom of the scale against men at the top. Don't you dare mention maternity leave, the paid time off just for being knocked up. That way, by ignoring all of this we can skew the statistics.

When we're talking about a murder, I know someone had their life taken.

If we're talking about theft, I know someone had something taken from them.

If we're talking about rape, I'm unsure if we're talking about a regretting a one night stand the morning after or someone getting held down in an dark alleyway against their will.

Since most of the time when feminists talk about rape they're talking about the former, they've reduced the significance of a serious crime by broadening it. Then the feminists bitch about police not taking it seriously when a rape is reported... guess what, you caused that! You cried wolf too much and now cops are going to get skeptical, meanwhile the actual rapists stay out on the street.
