overweight diabetic woman dies

article writes "Everything about Crystal’s life was ordinary, except for her death"

as a future doctor i facepalm

I'm not sure what the point of that article was at all. We know why these people are dying earlier, those from lower socio-economic backgrounds are more likely to have an unhealthy lifestyle. The answer is right there in front of them.

The real issue is they just cannot bring themselves to blame individual women for the bad choices they make.

"No one knows why?"

How about that single motherhood constant stress and skyrocketing obesity product of poor people's food, both direct products of "welfare" (corporate subsidies and individual laziness / irresponsibility subsidies)?

a supposedly poor women suddenly dies at 38 for no apparent reason. thats the tenor of the article.

i dont know, but she doesnt seem poor to me - rather well fed.

Poor in America doesn't necessarily mean no money. Plenty of people make enough money to live in a cheap apartment. Poor people are actually more likely to be overweight, because cheap, fast food is fattening

Researchers have long known that high-school dropouts like Crystal are unlikely to live as long as people who have gone to college. But why would they be slipping behind the generation before them?

The answer is obvious. Being a high-school dropout in the 50s/60s/70 simply wasn't as bad a sign of problems with an individual woman's situation as her being a dropout in the 80s and 90s. The influence of socioeconomic factors on life expectancy is huge, and being a high-school dropout in more recent times is a red flag for other such issues that negatively impact life expectancy. From reading the article it seems clear that cultural milieu in this particular region plays a large part also.

Crystal would often go to Linda’s for homemade biscuits and gravy for breakfast, and she’d ask Linda to buy her liter bottles of Dr Pepper whenever she ran out. She was addicted to Dr Pepper.

Sounds like a healthy lifestyle to me.

Dr. Pepper's prescriptions aren't without side effects

A class issue is being framed as a sex issue, and the elephant in the room they keep dancing around even as they keep saying that poor black women aren't experiencing this is the PC dogma of "white privilege" that has shaped policy that has led to less social security nets for poor whites than poor people of other racial groups. Being a poor white man in countries like this is of course even worse.

They have lost five years, and no one knows why.

WTF?

Weston A. Price told us exactly why about 80 years ago now. Francis M. Pottenger told us exactly why a second time about 70 years ago or so.

We know why. That's plain for all to see, and several commenters have listed a variety of reasons that contribute to a more complete picture.

No, we have a different problem than mere generalized ignorance. We have a specific ignorance problem here. We know why, but we act like we don't know why. Or perhaps more precisely, we deliberately don't want to know why.

Julie knows a lot of young women who will never break the cycle. She has her own thoughts about what might be dragging down their life expectancy. “Desperation,” she says.

Yeah, desperation and the liters upon liters of Dr. Pepper.
