Great critique. She gives props to Dove for at least attempting to navigate the treacherous waters of beauty discourse, yet points out how even with seemingly pure intentions and clever execution, hegemonic ideas insidiously creep in and perpetuate the beauty myth

... beauty myth..

what is this i dont even

[–]Endorsed ContributorrebuildingMyself 6 points7 points8 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's only a myth when you aren't benefitting from it.

[–]pencilears -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

beauty myth: the idea that women exist to be beautiful to men and have no possible higher function as people with something productive to bring to society.

goes along with the myth that women don't value men for their physical attractiveness, but only for their social or monetary worth.

which at it's core is the idea that adult men are people and nothing else really is. not children, not "betas", not gay men, not women, not animals or objects. and as the only "real people", men do the looking and are never the object of scrutiny nor desire.

this hierarchical binary is a central pillar of patriarchal thought patterns.

beauty myth: the idea that women exist to be beautiful to men and have no possible higher function as people with something productive to bring to society.

You can value beauty in a women while also valuing their other attributes, can you not?

goes along with the myth that women don't value men for their physical attractiveness, but only for their social or monetary worth.

I do believe physical attractiveness is less important to women than it is to men, but still important. I don't think any men really believes physical attractiveness isn't at all important to women.

which at it's core is the idea that adult men are people and nothing else really is. not children, not "betas", not gay men, not women, not animals or objects. and as the only "real people", men do the looking and are never the object of scrutiny nor desire.

Men do the looking, but women select (generally). Both have an active role.

this hierarchical binary is a central pillar of patriarchal thought patterns.

You say patriarchy, I say it's human nature.

[–]pencilears -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

these are the broader cultural narratives, I didn't say they were objectively true, they just exist in the undercurrents of our culture.

that human beings are prone to seeing patterns in the form of binary pairs is a part of human nature, (left and right, black and white, night and day, all arguably arbitrary distinctions) what is ascribed to the positive, valued, or good side of those binaries changes with time and from culture to culture.

when we put men in the side where we put all the good things and women on the side with all the bad things, that is where we get some of the patriarchal thought patterns. and as it's a limiting way to think about the world I will say I dislike it. (there are good things about patrilineal systems and some aspects of patriarchical cultures work really smoothly, but lumping women onto the not-people side of a binary with men occupying all the space labeled "real people" I am not so hot on.)

also, when you find a situation where women do the asking and men do the passive selection you will find men acting just as choosy as women do. (there's a study on this, I might have to dig it up,) so that's not a part of human nature so much as it is our culture right now.

"Did you hear that, ladies? How beautiful you are affects everything—from your personal relationships to your career. It could not be more critical to your happiness! "

Oh to be in such denial....

[–]itsmehobnob 7 points8 points9 points 13 years ago (24 children) | Copy Link

"seems to be enforcing our very narrow cultural perception of “beauty”: young, light-skinned, thin."

How is this narrow, or cultural? Those 3 traits are universally considered attractive.

Many of the blogs written by women are very difficult to read. They are all written in first person and revolve around the writers feelings. Do women struggle that much with objectivity?

[–]redpillspeeddate 7 points8 points9 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Do women struggle that much with objectivity??

Yes, they have a completely solipsistic sense of logic - best example http://rationalmale.wordpress.com/2012/03/22/solipsistic-logic/

[–]pencilears 3 points4 points5 points 13 years ago (22 children) | Copy Link

well, men are more inclined, in my experience, to struggle with subjectivity.

you have a good example right here:

Those 3 traits are universally considered attractive.

I read this as meaning that you find these traits to be attractive.

which is fine. but you've generalized your own opinion and by doing that you've failed to realize that you are being subjective. I could find men anywhere who each like different things: curvy girls, MILFs, dark hair, amputees, tattoos, dark skin, slightly crooked teeth, straight hair, curly hair, smart girls, stupid girls, tomboys, punks, and other men, the whole range of human experience is sexy to somebody somewhere.

and I expect that you would dismiss each and every person who disagreed with you as an outlier, a weirdo, because you have decided that your own head has such a good handle on objective reality that your own opinions are always the objective truth.

this isn't to say that you're wrong to find attractive what you find attractive, but it would be unreasonable to universalize your experience and then claim women struggle with objectivity.

I'm just a lurker here, and I'd probably disagree with you on most issues, but I appreciate seeing an opposing viewpoint on this subreddit being expressed in a calm and reasonable manner. Most people who express views like yours do it with a sort of venom that makes their posts difficult to read. I think the reason people are driven to such extremes on gender issues is because discussion always ends up so hostile, so both sides retreat back to their echo chambers. Please stick around.

[–]pencilears 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

thank you, I consider myself to be trolling this subreddit, but as it appears to me to me to be a sub filled with jargon and reflexive hate, the best troll to that is clear writing and compassionate reasonableness.

not everybody is an extremist, but the loud people tend to be, and I'm sure we could agree on some basic principles.

[–]Sword11 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link

You should read this study. Very objective and telling about what beautiful is categorically.

[–]pencilears 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (18 children) | Copy Link

I've seen this. yes they are very pretty, discussion questions for you though:

why so you think a porn star and a study of porn stars, is your go-to example of an unquestionable and objective beauty? what made you chose this and what appeals to you about it as a source? what point do you hope to prove to me? and why is it important to you that I understand that point?

feel free to answer or not answer, any way you like.

[–]Sword11 -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago* (17 children) | Copy Link

You chastised a poster above for making generalizations about attractiveness and beauty. While porn stars are certainly not beautiful, this study does provide a unique insight into the specific qualities men in general find attractive (age, cup size, weight, hair color). From there you can extract a quantifiable measure of beauty for a majority of males. (Excluding personality, social status, education and other hard to measure factors).

Simply put, there are physical attributes that men prize over others. Just like there are general attributes that women find appealing in men.

[–]pencilears -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link

why is what the majority of males thinks important? why is it important to find objective/quantifiable standards of beauty in the first place?

[–][deleted] 13 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

[permanently deleted]

[–]pencilears 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

ok, but I want to know why you think this is important,

I could just as easily show you the OKC study where bland but conventionally attractive looking girls get less messages than girls who kind of aggressively brand themselves (as somebody who really is into rodeos for example, or a tattooed rockabilly girl)

and if it's just breaks in the "genetic game" (which I dispute, poverty will fuck up your face and your height more than anything in your genetic history.) why is it important?

[–]Sword11 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

ok, but I want to know why you think this is important,

I'm tired of the psychologist speel. It is important because the article and you made it the argument. You set the framing and this is it. There are measures for beauty, men do notice beauty, and no despite what the woman's forum says "everyone is not beautiful just the way they are." (Don't get me wrong it isn't everything though.)

I could just as easily show you the OKC study where bland but conventionally attractive looking girls get less messages than girls who kind of aggressively brand themselves (as somebody who really is into rodeos for example, or a tattooed rockabilly girl)

Problem with that is OKC is a fairly isolated segment. Guys that get dates don't usually use it, so the study is not representative of males as a whole. Porn on the other hand is watched by a vast majority of the male population.

and if it's just breaks in the "genetic game" (which I dispute, poverty will fuck up your face and your height more than anything in your genetic history.) why is it important?

I wasn't aware you height could change. I'm 6'4" how do I get rid of a few inches now? Unless you are talking malnutrition, which is not really common (to that extent in the US). Men are wired how we are wired. Why is an emotional connection important to women?

[–]pencilears 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I am talking about malnutrition, my grandma survived the great depression by eating dirt (some of the time anyway) and she is a tiny little person, all of her grandkids are giants so her genes aren't coded for tiny, but her phenotype is. if I visit a crappy part of town the lack of health care will have marked the faces of the people around me (no acne meds, no money for a dentist, no fixing a cleft palate, and that "trailer park look" which I can generally know when I see it but as it's an all over thing I can't describe it better than weasel-ish)

alright I'm going to make ehhh noises at you and put it down to a fundamental difference in opinion on the idea that I think looks are subjective and you don't. we can both agree that people have all kinds of things to offer above and beyond looks.

women need an emotional connection to date people because it usually means we aren't going to get the crap kicked out of us by the men we are with. (there was a Louis CK bit on this recently. ) I would also argue that the men I know in my life value an emotional connection as well. so, it's not even a gendered thing, people want to be with other people who care about them.

[–]Sword111 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

alright I'm going to make ehhh noises at you and put it down to a fundamental difference in opinion on the idea that I think looks are subjective and you don't. we can both agree that people have all kinds of things to offer above and beyond looks.

Except it isn't just my opinion, but men as a whole

[–]pencilears2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

generalizing and universalizing you own opinion. and we're back at square one.

[–]Sword111 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Did you forget the study that can be applied to men as a whole? Apparently.

That is not opinion, not generalization. That is quantitative.

[–]pencilears2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

sigh, and now I have to resort to memes.

look, that is just, like, your opinion man.

[–]Sword112 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

So because it doesn't fit what you want to believe you ignore it... Gotcha

[–]RedSunBlue 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

why is what the majority of males thinks important?

Because it dispels the ridiculous "everyone is beautiful" myth that is contributing to the insane entitlement complexes of Western men AND women. Only in the West do you see morbidly obese women non-ironically say things like, "You can't get with this jelly."

why is it important to find objective/quantifiable standards of beauty in the first place?

If a woman knows that her best chance of finding a wonderful husband is in her early 20's when she is at her most beautiful, she will be less likely to put off marriage until her 40's, only to realize that the men she wants no longer want her.

Understanding the truth benefits everyone. You cannot make smart life choices based on lies.

[–]pencilears 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I don't view this as a truth vs lies situation, this is a multiple subjective opinions situation.

I have a very good friend who is also fat and she has a really nice fiancee who is completely into her and what she has going on. he could date other people, she could date other people (she has never been single for very long because she's good looking, smart, and really nice) but they don't, they like each other.

and there are dudes she has turned down and has every right to turn down. there are people who have no business getting with that jelly and being choosy has lead her to have good positive relationships.

even then, ugly people have the right to pick who they want to be with. it's their life.

If a woman knows that her best chance of finding a wonderful husband is in her early 20's when she is at her most beautiful, she will be less likely to put off marriage until her 40's, only to realize that the men she wants no longer want her.

this is the point where I squint at you and go, but why do you care? it's their life. they get to live it.

[–]RedSunBlue 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I don't view this as a truth vs lies situation, this is a multiple subjective opinions situation.

It doesn't matter how you view it. Dating services still have difficulty finding men to participate in their 40 and over events, but have to beat them off with a stick for their 30 and under events.

Also, nice anecdote. I have a friend who smokes a pack a day, eats mostly McDonalds, and yet doesn't look a day over 27. Maybe I should go pooh-pooh all the so-called health experts at the hospital.

this is the point where I squint at you and go, but why do you care? it's their life. they get to live it.

They can live how ever they see fit. I just believe its in their best interests to know the reality of the sexual marketplace when they make their life decisions, especially if a husband and children are going to be involved.

There are too many stories of women fucking around in their 20's and then settling for a nice guy in their 30's, only to divorce said nice guy because she feels entitled to the quality of man she had when she was younger. Often there are children involved.

These are the types you see writing opinion pieces titled "Where have all the good men gone?"

In any case, if more people wake up to our biological realities, great. If not, more hilarious news stories for me.

[–]pencilears 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

well if you're friend is 18 it could be a problem. also men over 40 don't care about internet dating for a number of reasons.

people get divorced after they marry young because, and I believe this, human mating patterns cycle with about how long it takes to conceive and raise the last kid to about age 5. we don't mate for life unless we want to, and not everybody wants too once the Oxytocin wears off.

so if you want to be aware of a "biological reality" there's one for you.

[–]RedSunBlue2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

well if you're friend is 18 it could be a problem.

Nope. 37. Try again.

also men over 40 don't care about internet dating for a number of reasons.

Again, nope. I didn't say anything about internet dating. I'm talking about face-to-face dating events, e.g., speed dating.

people get divorced after they marry young because, and I believe this, human mating patterns cycle with about how long it takes to conceive and raise the last kid to about age 5. we don't mate for life unless we want to, and not everybody wants too once the Oxytocin wears off.

True, that is definitely something to consider. However, those behaviors evolved in a time where young were essentially raised by the whole tribe/village, and there were no such things as 'visitation rights' and 'child custody'. Even if one's parents did decide to seek other mates, they didn't disappear from your life nor would you be stuck in a single mother/father situation. It's not exactly something we can encourage in a society based on the nuclear family model.

[–]Sword11 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Hey YOU brought it up, I was simply providing a resource.

Plus isn't that what this whole thing is about? The author of the article is saying everyone is beautiful... Sorry but that isn't true, and there are quantifiable ways to determine beauty (as we went over above). A person can be amazing and wonderful in their own right, but not beautiful...... Just the breaks off the genetic game.

[–]Sword11 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Wtf she clearly implies "brave, strong, smart" should be enough for a woman to be beautiful. I have yet to hear a man be called handsome for having those qualities
