Hi!

I've reached a point in my life where I've reached a plateau, and having been a lurker for about 9 months now, I was hoping you lovely ladies could give me some advice or feedback on ways to make improvements in my life to help me reach my goals.

Background

I'm a 20 year old student in the Southern Hemisphere. I'm currently in university studying biological sciences with a heavy emphasis on ecology, and in the future I have interest in going into veterinary medicine or more medical based worked. I don't have the best family background - my father was an abusive man with low empathy, who was often heavily involved in various crimes and spends most his time these days dating women my age. Understandably we are no contact unless he actively seeks me out. My mother is a BPD who cycles rapidly through relationships, seeking high value men but often ending up with the kind of men you would expect from the situation. As a result, I have heavy responsibilities when it comes to my two younger siblings, and a lot of my emotional support comes solely from my grandparents and two very close female friends. I'm currently in therapy for chronic depression and PTSD, and unfortunately have struggled with alcoholic usage in the past.

The areas that need some work:

• I'm very bad at making friends so far. A lot of my closest friends have been party girls who are extremely promiscuous, into lots of substance abuse, and typically have quite a mean and manipulative streak. As you would expect, the relationships imploded very badly. I'm working through it in therapy, but I really do struggle with friends, and after the latest bad run I do admit I have withdrawn quite a bit socially. I do have a few close friends, but unfortunately they're living in different cities due to study and we don't get to see each other much. I'm at a loss at how to make like-minded friends - I'm really excited about the idea of meeting passionate people who's goals are more aligned with my own, but I'm struggling to do so. What are some good ways to meet people who I might be more likely to click with? How does one go about vetting friendships?

• I've unfortunately gained a significant amount of weight at university. It's been put down to contraception I was on at the time as well as anti-depressants I was on for a year. I'm very embarrassed by it. I was never allowed to play any type of sport as a child and have no gym experience, so I don't even know where to begin to go to lose the 30 or so kg I have put on. What is the best way to initially start on my weight loss journey? How do I keep motivated over the period of time it is going to take to get me where I want to be?

• I struggle with time management. I have had fluctuating grades over the past year or so, and a lot of it is to do with my time management. I also miss out on really good opportunities because I tend to procrastinate applying or signing up for them and before you know it, the deadline has hit. What are some ways you use in order to get things done efficiently, or methods you can recommend?

Finances. I have absolutely no experience with budgeting or any type of money management. I can be pretty impulsive with money which leads to a lot of stress later down the line. What is a good way to begin to learn realistic budgeting skills that I can apply to my life, especially as I'm currently a student? Is there any factors in the long-term that I should start taking into consideration that maybe haven't crossed my mind yet?

• I tend to judge men harshly on first meeting, which rules them out quite quickly. I've been in nun mode for over a year now, which has been very good for my mental health, and I'm contemplating gently dipping my toes back into the dating pool. Is it worth it at this stage, or should my efforts be focused on other areas of my life for the foreseeable future? Is there a way I can start to make myself more comfortable with men and behaviours that I may instinctively perceive as scary/threatening/aggressive/etc in order to transition myself into a stage of life where dating is viable for me?

Pessimism. As you can probably tell from the vibe of this post, I have quite a pessimistic outlook on life. I've tried really hard to get into positive re-framing and not negatively ruminating, but I still really struggle. I really need some effective ways to begin to tackle this issue as it's not doing me any favours.

• And finally...femininity. I've never been traditionally feminine. My mother admits that about the time I started to hit puberty, she felt a bit threatened by me, so she did her best to raise me to be more masculine or boyish (which is a whole other suitcase to unpack in itself). As a result I'm pretty bad at being feminine - the definition of rough around the edges. What are some good ways I can begin to introduce myself to femininity in a positive way that can help me connect with that side of myself?

I'm really grateful for any advice that could be offered. I genuinely want to make my life a much happier experience for myself, and I hope that I can really gain some wisdom here.
