I personally never understood why mass shooters are called 'mentally ill' whereas gang members are just 'delinquent thugs' by some.

Because those thugs are still rational people while Elliot Rodgers are living in a warped fantasy reality.

As far as I know Elliot Rodger was a narcissist and when the world did not validate his narcissism. It is suggested it had a lot do with his upbringing.

With incel type people and narcissists, the symptoms are often examined more than the root of their issues. The root of their issues usually is they believed the world to be one way, and when it did not go their way, they became depressed, in most cases they will retreat to social isolation, in extreme cases they become Elliot Rodger.

People who have narcissistic personality disorder often lack the introspection to even try to get help. The only thing you can do is raise awareness and make sure they know the options if they are suffering.
