According to most articles ive read on artificial wombs its claimed they are only about 35 years away I dont really see it changing abortion laws though. However with future methods of birth control and artificial wombs as well as the genetic engineering benefits of not having a baby the old fashion way but going the test tube route instead, there will probably be way less abortions anyway. I still find it amazing how one day in the not so distant future there will be children born with no biological mother. Two gay men could have a child through stem cell eggs and an artificial womb. Babies will be born without a woman in the mix at all. The sacred bond between mother and child and the all important notion of motherhood itself will become a thing of the past.

What im really curious about is how women will be seen in society after all this. I could only assume that stripping women of their exclusivity to the creation of life would seriously lower the importance society puts on women.

I doubt it. Artificial wombs are actually tangentially related to my field (biochemistry) and they are probably a looooong way off. We are slowly but surely getting closer to making lab grown organs, but it's still very challenging. Actually developing organs that can be kept alive outside of an organism, with intents to do grow human being adds another level of technology that needs to be developed and also political issues to overcome. Meanwhile, the pro-choice views and more and more ingrained in our culture. By the time we get artificial wombs, the controversy around abortion would likely be a thing of the past.

It would be hard to quantify because you not only have to get to the point of them being made. Which is likely decades away at the least. But you have to go through the process of the tech maturing and going from an exclusive, high cost luxury to a lower cost, accessible option for people who work for a living. That's when it will start to have a society wide impact.

And that could be generations away, depending. That assumes that the inevitable ethical debate that will surely come up doesn't quash the technology before it can mature. Consider what theists would say to removing the mothering component entirely from the process of birth. I can't imagine they'd all be perfectly fine with removing the human element from the maturation of a fetus.
