Saw this post on WaPo: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-switch/wp/2015/01/15/using-facebook-and-twitter-a-lot-can-actually-decrease-stress-if-youre-a-woman/?hpid=z14
(Tried to get an archive link for that, was unable to. If anyone knows how to do so, I'll edit my post)
Thought of this sub instantly. Some of the more interesting excerpts so that you can avoid contributing to WaPo's clickbait ad revenue:
Social media provide what Hampton calls "supportive exchange." In other words, people feel less stressed because they can stay in contact with friends and family, and feel that community support.
Something something, validation?
Women are more likely to be active sharers than men. And posting a quick photo on Instagram or update on Facebook is a low-cost, easy way to do that.
Who knew?
While not everyone wants to see them all the time, [posting] may be important for women in reducing stress.
Emphasis on "not everyone"! I know I've been avoiding social media more and more lately, and unfollowing/unfriending people who clutter up my feeds with stupidity.
On that note — it's easy to bash FB, but it's a useful networking tool if you prune your contacts right. Join groups and pages you like, only friend/follow people who are actually interested in seeing you succeed. It's your choice, FB can either be a cesspool of useless clickbait and baby photos, or it can be a useful relevant tool to motivate you and connect you to people you want in your life. Let's be real: if your entire feed is trash, it's your fault. On that note, remaining friends with people you know is valuable (increase SMV, leave the connection open — messaging someone after you've unfriended them is pretty awkward!), but unfollowing them can be golden to keep your friends list large and active, but your feed uncluttered and quality. Use this button: http://puu.sh/eyRVn/3bc5683117.png — you'll never see their stuff again. Go to GB real quick, and scroll through. How much stuff do you actually care about? If the answer is anything but "all/most", you've got some pruning to do.
This sort of turned into a lecture about the uses of social media while not wasting your time in the vanity pageant it can easily become. Hope it helps some of you!
