We all die alone. That argument has always seemed silly to me especially when people use it to justify having kids. You have kids and you will die in a home while said kids are out spending your money. Unless they're bugging you for your prescriptions. You can only rely on yourself at the end of the day.

This is primarily an anglo thing though. Oh god how common is this? 0.o

That being said it might not be that bad a deal if you're the introverty type who doesn't need much family time. Or if you're extremely ill and need medical staff on call 24 hours a day.

Yeah it is. Old folks get shoved in a nursing home or retirement village so the young and beautiful don't have to upset themselves with the realization that they're going to be old and decrepit one day too. The extended family living together or near each other and supporting each other has died in the arse in the west.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The young and beautiful? As in the 50-60 year old children of those 80 year old elderly people?

[–]figjamftwswimming0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Their 20/30 yo grandkids who want their real estate and inheritance.

Honestly I fully expect to die alone, before my parents die, and I don't give a flying fuck. I have no idea why everyone is so hung up about how many people are around them when they're about to die. You're gonna die. Know what that means? Your brain turns off forever. You cease to function. You're gone. When you're dead you will not be able to appreciate the fact your spawn were around to look at you while you went. Because you won't be able to think or feel because you'll be dead.

So this obsession people have about what they leave behind when they die, or who is there in hospital, it's just nonsensical to me. Can you explain the big deal? Because I genuinely don't get it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Transcendence, in the non-religious sense. The ability to see things from other perspectives than your own limited ego. For example the idea is not to appreciate the spawn from the grave, the idea is that it will be good for them.

For me it is more on the negative side. It is not that I ride a joy train towards unselfishness, rather I feel profoundly guilty if I just chase my joy and don't incorporate duties to my life. I need for my self-esteem to see myself as someone who discharged his duties. It is a bit of a military logic: if you fail at your duties you feel like a nobody, a no-person.

This is how I am wired. Maybe not really healthy. I think I may have some mental condition. Chronic low self esteem or something. But you too, no offense, but you tend towards sociopathy, because you are like me, me, me, and me.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You sound like you run a sad life if you feel guilty simply for pursuing your own happiness, especially if you feel the need to call other people sociopaths based purely on the fact they do. As far as I'm concerned the act of having children is what's truly selfish. Watch this guy explain it better than I can.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah don't predict my kids are going to be selfish. Neither the genes, nor the upbringing and if I am smart, not even the other kinds of formative experiences will make them selfish. (I am looking into things like scouting, martial arts camps with a spiritual flavor, maybe meditation retreats etc. I think these kinds of things help kids keep their egos in check.)

Besides the handy thing about men having shorter life expectancies is wife nursing you in your last years. But only if you select your wife for a warm heart, not for looks. A "trophy wife" won't. But my mother was incredible at it, in my dads last months she rode the bus 2 hours to the hospital 2 hours back every day.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

All human beings are selfish. Yes including you. And you're only deluding yourself if you pretend otherwise.

At least you're being pragmatic. I'm suspicious of people who think that the ease of attracting young women in their thirties will continue forever because "Oh, I'll just be like Hugh Hefner and become extremely rich." Cool, easy plan! Why isn't everone doing this?!

I don't know why you dying alone or not is anyone's business anyway. I don't think companionship means that much to most RP men and I'm sure many of them are aware that they may not have it now, or later in life, if they just want to have ONS. Fine by me, it's the opposite of how I live my life but it's also not my problem.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think human life in the alienated modern world always balances on the edge of depression. This is why I think those who disregard companionship are objectively wrong. Most people probably get most of their kicks from 3-4 major sources. If those stop being fun, they will be hovering on the edge of "why even get out of bed, why even live" i.e. depression.

Having a loyal, committed, loving partner, no matter her looks is an incredibly good help in finding new reasons to live.

This is one of the dumbest shit people say..."you'll die alone". Everybody fucking dies alone. Unless, like OP's airplane analogy, you join a cult. The David Koresh Branch Davidians in Waco? They died together.

[–]drok007Not white enough to be blue pill1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I think the idea is more of having a legacy project in the way of children and family, not comparing it to dying in a plane crash. If you don't care about kids and family, then more power to you. Except you might as well go full MGTOW at that point since they are still taking and using your tax money.

Just what IS MGTOW then? :/ Are they NEETS?

[–]drok007Not white enough to be blue pill0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, they just figure out ways to not pay taxes. Usually try and get off the grid. So if they are successful in that maybe. But I'm not sure if the classification counts then.

[–]figjamftwswimming1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Everyone dies alone. Might as well enjoy the life bit before you do. Tell the busybodies to go hug a tree.

"You'll die alone."

I really haven't heard this one as an actual accusation from anyone in my life. My uncle is 40+ and single as well, but I never heard anyone speak negatively about it like that.

My point is that it most likely isn't a 'BP/Feminist' argument at all. It's an argument for shitty people.

[–]ReginleiferOnly Zombies want female brains0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Rather than settle with these poor scraps, I've decided to stay single until the day I die

Funny you should mention that, I just stopped seeing a girl on similar circumstances Everything was going swimmingly at first, and I actually chose her because I thought she was of good character, a nice Ortho Christian woman. But it turns out the more and more she spoke, the more tiny details about her real feelings towards religion, traditional families and sex came up.

I'm pretty patient, so it takes a while for me to give up on people. But eventually I couldn't even pretend to go with the motions. I'm worth more than that. :P

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

36 here. How long do you think money is going to make you happy? My point is, entropy marches on. You probably already don't enjoy a lot of things you did at 20 (like dancing all night), and this will be more and more. I could already write a long list, ten years younger than you (two day hangovers, the gut not liking spicy food anymore etc.) and maybe your body works better but sooner or later entropy catches up.

Another and deeper issue is that the number of friends / social circles tends to reduce as we get older. It is harder to make new friends and we lose old ones all the time.

For most people I know 50+ their spouse is pretty much a replacement for friends. Want to try a new ethnic restaurant and don't know anyone who would come with me? Take the missus! This kind of thing. My parents had basically no friends 50+. They died, got poor, moved away or sooner or later there was some bad blood.

Another thing is that I think ultimately any kind of happiness in life depends on achievements. It is not the act of drinking an expensive wine that is in itself good, but the whole "achievement unlocked, I earned this" feeling during it. It's a "trophy" earned. But as you get older these kinds of achievements get less and less important and there is basically one big kind of achivement that matters: succesful, healthy, wonderful kids and grandkids.

@RP if you are so big on biological determinism, what about the urge to reproduce and the urge to invest into offspring? Before you get started on "the alpha strategy is quantity not investment", let me point out that humans are incredibly K-selected, this is why we type on a keyboard instead of doing whatever rabbits do.
