I'm kinda curious. From TRP perspective, it would seem that it's because of hypergamy - "women rarely go for males with lower social status then themselves". But is it really ?

I've read an article and some forum posts (nothing scientific, it's just an anecdotal observation), and other reasons included could be that male sexuality is more threatening to women than vice-versa (A woman could be easily over-powered and abused, get pregnant, etc). Also the general perceived notion of random sex being easier and less fulfilling for women.

As for BP's position, I guess it would be said that this is bollocks and post counter examples. I'm just not sure if these counter examples would count to 50% of people who have groupies. Or maybe just say that women have to be more discreet, and mention other variables of why it isn't equal.

So, how is it in your opinion ?

I have put some posts as they show how people outside TRP/BP world think about this situation. Also some anecdotal stuff from women who are performers and people who know them. It was hard to find any article analysing this situation in depth, I've spent over hour trying to find something worthwhile.

I've also read that Janis Joplin had groupies.
