How do you differ between disrespect and joking?

Are people laughing at you or with you?

It’s a world of difference. Guys shit talk each other all the time. It’s how we communicate most of the time. When someone is joshing you it’s pretty obvious they’re just having fun with you. When someone is taking shots at your expense you can hear it in their tone and see it in their body language. Are they acting friendly or being passive-aggressive? Those two things define the context of the situation.

My advice is to not take anything too seriously and to put yourself out there as much as you can and you’ll learn quickly. If you want, watch some standup comedy and see the tonality of a roast, versus an insult. A joke is making fun of something the other person DOESNT take seriously, an insult is making fun of something the other person DOES take seriously.

It’s like, making fun of a ballerina on her balance could be an insult, but making fun of the same ballerina about how she looks like she’s enjoying strutting around in these tights a little too much is a roast. That’s the difference.

Is it meant in good fun or does he have a motive to put you down? Does said person tend to put people down in general or has a good time with people and just likes to tease? Does he give compliments as well as jabs?

Basic A&A dude. Doesn’t matter if it was a joke or disrespect- in your case just use AA to strengthen your dgaf.
