There’s pride in hard work. There’s unfulfilment in laziness. You know your potential and you aren’t reaching it so you feel like a loser. You also aren’t passionate about the work. Your time is important. If you can’t find anything in the job to get passionate about, leave it.

Dude I feel this big time. You should read the book "Bullshit Jobs" by David Graeber.

Until recently I was in kind of a similar situation, decent paying tech job, easy work but an total bullshit job. Most of my coworkers would just fuck around all day just like what you're doing, some were severely under qualified and nobody noticed or even cared. It would have been really easy to do this too, just fuck around too but as you've discovered it gets boring. I wondered why I bothered going to college, getting experience for a job I could teach a graduate to do in a month and putting up with constant uncertainty and toxicity at work. So I quit.

Now your situation is a little different in a couple of ways. You are on good terms with your boss whereas I was kind of the opposite, but you feel you are under qualified for the job so it might be hard to find another one you can thrive in, or maybe have to take a pay cut.

I would suggest trying nonetheless, you have time to shop around for a job where you can actually find rewarding and challenging. This is how you will grow as a professional and develop the skills that will be valuable for you in the future. Without skills, you're going to be forever tied to this job of yours and that puts you in a position of scarcity. Having desirable skills is the abundance of the corporate world. This job of yours might suddenly become more stressful and become more like mine was, or the company might restructure, then you'll find yourself in a really bad position.

To draw an analogy, you're in a relationship with a fat girl with a cute face that is great in bed and takes care of you, but deep inside you know you settled. You have no motivation to improve yourself or raise your SMV and you know that if she does cheat on you one day you'll be fucked.

So my advice is that while you have this job as a safety net, take your time and be selective, find somewhere that suits your skill level, somewhere rewarding and somewhere you can grow your skills. Since you are good friends with your boss you can leave on good terms, have a solid reference and maybe even be able to go back there again one day if your new job doesn't work out.

Be lucky you don’t overwork. My two internships one I didn’t get paid and worked 30 hrs a week during school. The other knee I worked 70-80 hrs a week as got paid for 40. And I hated my boss. You’re so lucky.

I’ve seen myself lose positions many times to people less qualified to me for the simple fact that they jived better with whoever runs stuff. I guess it’s a choice people make sometimes.

Edit: with all this free time. Perhaps use it to work on something that actually challenges you

You should be asking your boss for more important work which is a stretch and requires you to learn on the job.

You should tell your boss you need more challenging work. You’re the only person in charge of your career, start acting like it.

Depending on who you talk to there may be several different issues here. but regardless of who you talk to there is definitely one issue -- if something happens and you no longer have that job, you are going to need skills to survive at your same quality of life. it behooves you to start learning skills immediately.

Vibes also in a sort of similar role. Just graduated and at a big tech company. Placed into a different role than I expected and sort of just bs'ing til I can work somewhere else. I need maybe a year or so of experience before I can jump id estimate. I'm starting to feel a bit more motivated but still not that much

I was in a similar position: No College, Handsomeley paid + Bonuses. In the early days I worked like a mad dog & with infectiously high enthusiam thet's prolly why I could stuck around.

When it got "boring" for me I manufatured the 'passion' by building a software that could automate a massive chunk of my tasks—chopping the time between input/out down to a fifth of the time usually taken. Then I added a database to automate some of the manual inputs themselves let alone the processing of them into a coherent output.

This doesn't mean you're buying into the position or even 'agree' with or like it. It is simply a mindset for you to keep yourself on the ball, sharp, creative & in a giving vibe rather than:

"deteriorating as they waste away"

It's like you're on some sort of retreat & you wanna workout but they have Yoga classes on all the time that your Girl keeps pestering you to join. Whateva fam, go play with her in class, then volunteer to be the donkey for all the manual labour & backpack carying for the remainder of the time.

In your case you could work on stuff on the side, obviously.
