Might be a stupid question, but hear me out.

I am about to graduate college with a degree in engineering. I anticipate getting a job in the $100k/yr range after graduation (Bay Area, CA — not as much money as it seems). I know a lot of people here who buy fancy new cars after getting their first job but IMO it’s often not a financially sound decision.

I was also planning on getting a nice car after graduation but realized that I’m absolutely shit with managing my money and I need to calm the fuck down and get a used Prius or something. My question is, how important is the car you drive in terms of your SMV? Like driving a 2011 Prius vs. a brand new BMW M3? If I get a used Toyota or Honda for <$10k then I’ll be able to start putting away money into my savings sooner. It’ll be less glamorous but a lot more financially sound.

The reason why I ask this is because I feel like a lot of women would be turned off to see a guy driving such a “lame” car like a Prius. But the reality is that I know I could get a nicer car, and I’m just choosing to settle for something cheaper and more practical for the time being while I save my money for the future. Do women even really care or am I just overthinking this?
