I'm in disbelief every time I see a post or comment on this sub where someone's waxing nostalgic for how men used to be or for when dating used to be good. Like, what are you talking about? Men have always been men. If they used to be anything they used to be worse, because up until a few short decades ago, most women had no rights. We were property. Oh, did you just watch some Downton Abbey and now you want to know where all the gentlemen are? Girl, that was the same period where women were being committed to insane asylums for doing what Edith did, she was just white and privileged.

It's like the women's version of a white man longing wistfully for the wholesome American days of the 50s. You think dating was better in the past? Whatever you've been watching, it wasn't Mad Men.

And I know we always get one or two posters objecting that it wasn't so in their country/culture, but I'd really like to know which those are, because unless we've got some Native American posters in here I don't know what you're referring to.

She could have been speaking today. When men and pickmes claim that sexism is not a big issue anymore because it's not like we can't own property and vote etc, they aren't acknowledging the fact that, while we have more on paper, men's and society's views really haven't changed that much. Things such as "sex work" and casual sex have been rebranded as "empowering choices" , but even when people shriek about our liberation, has any ones view really changed? Are things any better whether we're groomed to do it - more common now - or forced into it out of desperation - more common in the past. Nothing will change until the way we are treated stops being looked at as a "women's issue" for us to solve on our own. Nothing will change really until the people in positions of power esp in the legal system really start to change their view. And nothing at home will change until society as a who starts to change its view of us.

The past shouldn't be glorified, but not should the present.
