Absolutely. Also a Canadian. I took out a 20k loan for 1.99% for a one year term and bought bonds registered as RRSPs when bonds hit their low point about a month or so back. I'll probably make a thousand bucks on the flip, given how shit equity performance is driving the bond resurgence. If interest rates remain low in about five months, I'll do it again.

I just barely bought a kitchen time lock safe and am waiting for it in the mail. Lock up your money if you need to.

I was thinking of writing something about money but there - you've started it. Well done.

What I noticed is that you propose something that won't make any difference in the long run. You've touched a very important subject of "money makes money" which is crucial. I've let my savings sit on a savings account for too long. And even that now I've lost some money on the stock market my investment funds are making up for it. Invest in diverse assets and you'll be better than hiding your money under a mattress. But still you have to have some savings in the first place.

But how you can get any savings? Well I've been there and I have to tell you that earlier you start the easier it is. I am from moderate to poor family and I've been working since I can remember (point #1 - work as soon as you possibly can, whatever the job). All the big things I've bought (cars, phones, laptops, gadgets, etc.) were from my savings and thus I've learned that to have something you have to save some money first (#2 - treat saved money as a future prize; not as something taken from you). Since the very beginning I've been saving some money. You can always save a little, even if it's just a 10% of every paycheck. Make it your highest priority to do so every single month. (#3 - no matter what save fixed sum every month)

Of course it is easier when you're just starting to work. If you're spending everything you earn then you'll need to cut down your expenses thus lowering your standard of living. That can be painful but you have to get through this in order to save some money. The easiest way to do this is: sell stuff you're not using but it needs upkeep (car you rarely drive, mobile phone plan you're not using, things like that - go through your every bill and think if you can lower those), start cooking instead of eating out, find cheaper venues, stop drinking like crazy when you're out, use public transport instead of cabs and of course stop buying things you won't use regularly. Yes, that includes clothes you're not going to wear. (#4 go through your bills and shopping and think what's unnecessary)

Now here comes three very simple rules I've always been following since my early 20s that made my today's savings. First: whenever you get a raise, raise your savings by minimum 50% of that amount (#5). I'm usually doing 75%. It's extremely important - you won't make yourself accustomed to higher living standard yet you still will have more money to spend. That way whenever you'll be in a thigh spot it will be easier to find lower paying job which won't hurt your standards. Plus you will not burn through your savings as fast. Number 6 is: treat unsaved money like a debt. That means if you're saving 2000 of whatever currency every month and you've managed to save only 1000 (unexpected expenses - it happens) as soon as you can you should pay yourself back. Or rather your savings account. So save 3000 next month or 2100 for 10 months or whatever. Pay it back. Final thought (#7) - all bonuses should be used to repay all due savings (see #6). If there are none - that's your happy day, buy whatever you want. You've earned it. However for that money I'm still following rule #5 (I'm saving at least half of every bonus).

Don't get me wrong - I'm still spending money for some stupid things. I sometimes burn whole bonus just to go for a trip or to buy something even when I have due savings. But year to year I'm saving at least the amount I've declared. As most things TRP it requires regularity and self-control.

These few rules are just common sense I've been using so far. It's not "personalfinance" but those are things that worked for me. Do share your ways of making yourselves save some money.

In terms of the long run if you have that 5450 we got invest that's a single year.

You grow that for 5 years even at a modest 5% you end up with 6,381.41 Through the power of compound interest.

So you investment of 5185 netted a return of $1195.41 for basically just sitting on it in a very conservative model.

Personally Anyone under 30 should be looking at high risk margins particularly post crash like now. I have netted returns in the range of 12 - 18% but this is not for the weak willed or faint of heart you can just as easily lose it.

But in the example I presented it's safe investments with safe returns.

My example (results may vary):

  • Mutual Funds Unit Cost Units/Shares Price Total Value
  • Select Growth 17.887 1,083.191 21.4057 23,186.46
  • Select Conser 28.012 71.398 27.9781 1,997.58

This is over 2 years.

Just one thing:

Every dollar that you pay as tax is reinjected into the economy (badly given the power of SJW in the state, but still reinjected).

A contrario every dollar paid in interest disappear of economy and increase the dependance of society as a whole to the bank sytem: There is a strong penury of money in circulation which mean for the entreprenor it is very difficult to do anything without loanig money to the banks which therefore have the power over the companies and the whole economy.

Despite the fact that the numbers that you give are true (People often underestimate the influence of inflation over their economies), the method that you give has for result to increase the enslavement of the entire society to banks by debts and penury of money.

Our money system is in a bad situation with over-hyperinflation in stock market and penury of money in real economy is unstable and we should expect a tsunami of money coming from the stock market that will create hyperinflation in the real economy putting down your whole strategy.

If you want to get money, without contributing to the demesurate power of the bank system try to find a way to extract money from the stock market because all the money in circulation lies in it.

"Free money" is called arbitrage. Sounds like an interesting arbitrage opportunity.

It is true that we are losing money by saving, due to (hyper)inflation. This is why I recommend precious metals. Let the Fed continue quadrupling the money supply, your money won't become debased, because it's not in paper currency.

I'm starting to see a lot more on the red pill about finances. Heres hoping that the trend continues.

TheRedPill: where I go when I need financial advice from "shut up, bro" meatheads. We don't need none of them geeky books or personal finance blogs.
