Essentially you're shaming expletives.

I am a man who suffers neither from a limited vocabulary nor meagre candour of phrase. Every now and then, when I am angry, I will become quite profane indeed. Perhaps the post I published this morning is what you refer to, if not, said post probably affects you in the same way as whatever other post you refer to.

There's nothing wrong with profanity when a man is angry. I am sick to death of the modern need, so deeply ingrained in everyone, to shun, shame and discourage a man's anger. It is just another symptom of the banishing of masculinity - not the shunning of profanity itself, but its end result, which is the shunning of a man's anger.

There are 2 main reasons why it's done:

1) to emphasis your point. You say something concise and to the point and feel that the addition of "fucking" makes it sounds more direct and masculine.

2) you are incapable of articulating your thoughts in a clean and consice manner. Instead of using mature words you vomit out the first thing that comes to mind.

Option 3 is that you're just fucking angry. Not posturing, not uneducated. Burying anger inside of yourself is a great way to damage your psyche, and increase the likelihood that you'll have a gargantuan explosion of rage that you simply cannot control down the line. Bottling of anger is not healthy. Expression of anger is healthy.

That's the fault of the listener, if they are so affected by harsh words. Do not think that I misunderstand your point. I know several men who use profanity, the way I do when I'm angry, but they use it all of the time. And that is posturing/inefficacy at expression.

Strong dominant men convey their point through the use of proper yet powerful diction, not the use of explicatives.

*expletives. Only when they are calm. They, like every single other kind of man, experience anger from time to time, and more fool them if they allow the sensitivities of others to invalidate their own emotions.

You are full of shit. Cursing is a display of power because it shows you do not give a shit. Again there is a proper place and time for everything.

On the other hand, you can come off as being a bit odd/sheltered/old-fashioned if you never curse in casual settings. There are plenty of cases where cursing provides a level of emphasis that can't be reached otherwise, so why restrict yourself by renouncing it? But yeah, as with anything linguistic, cursing loses its meaning and potency when overused.

I agree with OP, to a certain extent.

I don't believe any man should forbid himself from using profanity, but young men in particular (13-25) often seem to cuss all day, every day, for no particular reason.

Profane words, like any other words, specific instances in which they're useful, but here's the thing: if you throw around fucks and shits and bitches all the time, then the impact of those is lost.

That's the key to a lot of word choices, in my opinion: The impact of any particular word is inversely proportional to the frequency in which you use it.

The same is true for people that throw words like 'love' and 'hate' around. When I say "I fucking love..." people know exactly where I stand, because they generally NEVER hear me say fuck, or love.

But if I said that I fucking love something every day, the impact of my words would be lost, and people would simply interpret it as "I like," except they also take note of my juvenile every-day vocabulary.

You guys know what´s also really stupid? Not knowing the difference between "they´re", "there" and "their". I see this a lot on reddit, not just on trp. Come on, it´s not that hard, fucking goddammit!
