I turned down a job 10 years ago that had a 25% bump in pay partially because part of the job would have been serving as mentor to two junior women of breeding age. I had already been burnt by being stuck covering women not once but twice in my career while they popped out babies, and it was pure hell. My job is already beyond full-time, and doubling up makes that even worse. Salaried, no additional compensation it's "just expected". No WAY would I have risked that nightmare scenario again.

That's why the phrase "family friendly" in the workplace is a red flag to me: it means that those without kids will be stuck covering for those who have them while the company gets the PR of being pro-women or whatever. Fuck that noise. I decided then that I would never mentor women, or even work with women in my field whom I might be expected to cover if their biological clock goes off.

Note that this was prior to the whole #metoo thing. That just makes the decision even more rational today; why risk trouble?

I don't afraid of women but my reason for not mentoring them is that it's futile. In most cases, they come with questions but not looking for the answers, or the way to solve the problems. Hidden beneath the questions are the demands that we do their works for them. Well, you should see the snowflakes puffing when I called out tht bullshit right at their faces.

Honestly Pence rule is the bare minimum of an approach in this day and age. It has nothing to do with fear, it's just basic risk management. Risk reward ratio of engaging with women in an exclusive professional meeting is just horrible and you would be utterly stupid to try it.

As a person that works in a profession in which mentoring plays a huge role... all I do for women is the bare minimum.

Lunch to give guidance and advice... no. They dont ask anyway, its like they think its a date and I have to ask them. Guys will drop by and say "hey, want to grab lunch." Sure.

Working long hours late into the night with them... no. Drop off you work and I will send back my notes after I look it over. Once the office population declines I am out that door.

Going out a limb to get them prime projects... no.

Spending hours chatting about why a certain solution was right for this client and why it wouldnt work for that one. Going through the decision points and the factors to consider along the way... no. To complete this product I need to to do X.

Get an email asking "hey can you sit down with me and teach me about X?"... Busy day. If we have a project together with X we can discuss it then.

I will give you a fair evaluation and I will give adequate instruction to get my work product out the door. Nothing more. When I look back all the mentoring I got that had any value was from men. Every female boss I ever had was manipulative and took without developing me.
