First thing you need to realize, precious metals are not an investment, they are an insurance, or even an assurance of holding value if the fiat currency does not.

Investments make money over-time, insurances protect value over-time.

do not buy gold/silver certificates, buy the bar or coin. You dont own it if you cant hold it.
if you cant afford an ounce of gold or silver, buy fractions BUT beware that fractions cost more overtime. For example, if you buy 1/4 of an ounce of Gold, it will be more expansive after buying four than buying the ounce itself.
if you buy coins, DO NOT buy to collect, buy pure bullion. An ounce of silver is whatever the current price is. If you buy triple that price because theres a Superman on the coin, when it will be time to sell, you will get the ounce/price not the collector's value unless you sell to collectors.

I buy gold and silver. It’s a hedge against market changes, but better than that, they are portable wealth accepted most places on the planet. And absolutely hideable and anonymous.

Recognizable coins are easier to sell than bars in an emergency. Government coins are the most recognized. Canadian maple leafs, American Eagles, Mexican libertads, South African krugerrands, etc. Rounds are different than coins and are more likely(not 100%) to be counterfeit. Bars are the easiest to counterfeit. Stick with reputable dealers like Apmex, or JM Bullion. Only buy bars from foundries like Pamp Suisse.

Gold and silver are not investment, I concur with the other guys here who say the same. Investments pay interest, gold and silver do not.

Essentially, you can place your money in gold/silver to protect your wealth in case society collapses, but not much is needed for this. I'd say $1,000 worth of silver and don't even bother with gold. There's no sense tying your money up in a lump of metal that will sit in a safe for the rest of your life.

90% silver is best bang for the buck and is less likely to be counterfeited. Chinese are counterfeiting bullion including the holders and not all of it gets caught. They aren't counterfeiting silver as much and 90% US silver coins? No.

Also much less relative above ground silver supply. Governments are holding tons of gold in vaults. Should they ever sell it could flood the market and drive down prices. Silver has industrial uses and gets consumed. Gold...not really. Gold silver ratio is 87 which is pretty high, making silver a relative bargain.

The mining gold-to-silver ratio is about 1:9 – only 9 ounces of silver are mined for every one ounce of gold. Estimates vary but sources say theres around 4 billion ounces of available silver and 2.5 billion ounces of available gold in bullion form. If the masses ever decide to buy metals silver will have shortages much sooner. Its worth noting many people think futures trading suppresses the price and has for many years. The total value of available above ground silver is less than half of bitcoin's market cap.

Theres also platinum group metals which are in tight supply but they dont have the perception of being a store of wealth by the sheep and are harder to sell. If autocatalyst demand ever softens, prices will fall fast, especially palladium and rhodium. Because Europe is moving away from diesel, which works better with platinum, it has been suffering while palladium has had shortages...it works better with unleaded.

Dealers will always expect a cut no matter what. So will eBay.

Gold & silver unfortunately are valued primarily via a secondary market mechanism. The big bullion banks like the Comex issue futures contracts that are traded in the ETF markets such as SLV & GLD with as many as 200 paper promises on each underlying actual precious metal ounce. This is highly distortionary to price discovery, creating an illusion of over supply, which has a price suppression effect. Unfortunately due to the nature of these secondary markets, there is no way to audit exactly who owns what at any given moment, hence most of the available stock has multiple owners at any given moment. Sure, you could just buy it on the open market, take delivery of it, so you own it outright, but then your speculative investment is at the mercy of market forces that are very clearly manipulated. Hence Bitcoin, that self audits as part & parcel of it's protocol design every 10 minutes, relegating secondary market manipulation to little more than a side show. Owner ship is simple. Your keys, your Bitcoin. Not your keys, not your Bitcoin. Oh, & counterfeiting is impossible as the protocol has it's own 'good delivery' mechanism in built as well. Im not saying don't but metals, in fact silver is perhaps the only commodity based form of sound money that still hasn't really left the station just yet. But in terms of sound money, diversity is a good thing & Bitcoin has quite the track record behind it, while the macroeconomic driver pushing it's price higher (central bank monetary supply expansion) is still not showing any signs of abating.

There's not much to it really. You just buy precious metals and hold them.

People have different opinions on the amounts, anywhere from 5% - 25% of your portfolio but no more

You can also buy gold / currency packets on the forex market. The upside is you can leverage (which may also be a downside)

Use to be, years ago, that financial planning advised people to invest 5% of their portfolio in metals. Now, not so much. You certainly can't go wrong with 5%. Any more than that, I'd say make sure you're maxing out your investments elsewhere first, then consider more.

And yes, it is insurance or a hedge, not an investment.

But, if you're hedging against a total financial collapse, you need to consider other insurances as well. Food, water, guns, ammo, etc. FWIW

Check out some of Peter Schiff’s videos and podcasts. You can learn a lot about the underlying fundamentals although it sounds like you have a good idea already.

I get my coins from a local dealer. I agree with the previous poster buy Maple Leafs, Philharmonics, Pandas. They are all 99% I believe. The British, American, and South African ones are good too but they are only 90% so I’d rather have the more pure ones.

Everyone getting dickhard over gold and silver. Metals that have a dollar amount attached to them. If the dollar loses its value, so does your metal. If the economy crashes entirely you cannot eat, drink, smoke, or fuck gold and silver. Invest in yourself instead.
