Tiny homes are basically just a "trendy" hyped name for a DIY "trailer home"... very problematic in any number of ways (not the least of which is water/sewer hookup, or even availability/practicality of a space to legally "plop" the things).

The "DIY" aspect certainly SOUNDS good -- but of course there is a caveat there in terms of cost: lots of advocates make claims about them being very cheap, but often that's because they only tally the price of the materials (and many times even "cheat" by using/reusing materials they obtained for free -- that's a "cheat" because there is no guarantee you can do the same) -- and they exclude the value of the labor & other potential costs (like a location or workshop to build the thing in/on, etc)

Said DIY can also cause other issues -- the things are often constructed without any "building permit/inspection" and as a result (regardless of the quality of the work good or bad) are basically "uninsurable" AND "unmortgageable" (you ain't gonna get a loan to build one based on it's "future collateral value") -- moreover many "trailer park" (aka "manufactured homes") subdivisions categorically exclude them for that reason (and other risks associated with them).

Likewise, even though they really are more akin to a "trailer-RV"; most RV parks won't let you park/live in them either -- certainly not long term (in fact a lot of RV parks have legal restrictions that limit the duration of any individual "rental"; requiring a relocation anywhere from at least once a year to once every 90 days to even once every 30 days).

Last but hardly least is resale value -- which seems to be dubious at best -- whatever you stick into the thing, you're rather highly unlikely to be able to recoup more than part of it.

Add on that -- from what I have gathered -- they're really just NOT as practical as the advocates claim. (Before I would even consider it, I would most definitely read/watch various "ex-tiny-home" things... get the low down on what people's actual experience has been; yeah there are a few who have made them "work" even still LIKE/LOVE them, but those seem to be rather specific cases/circumstances, and YMMV.)

By contrast...

Modest sized home (i.e. 1 to 1-1/2 to 2 bedroom; with 1 bath) -- basically built as a vacation home (cabin/cottage), but on a decent chunk of land -- so room for workshop, shed(s) multi-car garage & driveway (and/or at least off street parking of several vehicles etc).

IOW plenty big enough for a single person (even room for an occasional/short-term "guest") -- but not big enough to actually be a "family" home (that's normally a minimum of 3+ bedrooms, and these days at least 2+ bathrooms).

Chances are the latter (modest home/cabin/cottage) will be not all that much more expensive than some "tiny home" -- though of course LOCATION will probably be the key to that -- and will often come with well & septic (or even city water/sewer).

Plus of course not only would you be able to have the place insured, be able to obtain a traditional "mortgage" (and/or HELOC); but you would probably be able to "expand" the home with some "addition" (i.e. add on a bedroom or two with some additional bath) if & when it became necessary -- exactly how difficult or expensive that would be would vary depending on the house/locale; but it's at least far more "doable" than anything you could do with a "tiny house" scenario.

And of course your resale prospects for "modest sized house" -- either as a home for some single (or single with 1 child); or as a "vacation" property -- are likely going to remain fairly stable.

No kids Here. Motorcycle in my living room.

The average person only needs about 700 square feet of living area. So in your case it’s that times 3. 1400 feet of happiness.

I built mine around 600 square feet. It has just a kitchen, loft, large stone shower. I wanted to be able to drive my motorcycle up into the home. So this Tiny house has big glass doors that slide according style and let’s the natural south facing sunlight in.

Tiny houses are dope. Currently I’m in the process of designing a small community of new urbanism houses for 2020.

See You can buy a small 10 acre lot of land in Montana and build a pretty sweet spot for about 180,000$ or around 30k for just the tiny house.

You will need to learn how to weld and make stone walls and mortar, But if you go your own way. You can save more money.

I love the idea of the tiny house, but it doesn't seem compatible with children. That's been the main barrier for me as well.

you have to find a jurisdiction that accepts a tiny home, and you pretty much can't unless you want to live in the brush 500miles from anywhere.

The tiny house trend should die. We should think more realistic; like modest homes. For many years my family of five, all over the age of 18 for a few, lived comfortably in 1300 sq ft
