Another post someone started made me think that this may be a good topic to discuss. Life really is all about goals, regardless of MGTOW status or not. This is about a friend of mine that I met in the miltary when I was 20 years old.
He was medically discharged after being injured in the first Gulf War (we served together there). Afterwards, while in college he liked to get high for the sole purpose of trying to maintain an outwardly normal demeanor. It was a game and nothing else to him. After college, he did the expected thing and married and she cheated multiple times, was entitled, conspired with HIS mother, etc. His mother ran off his father when he was 12 years old by the way, with lies and accusations. He has since found his father and they have reconciled, unknown to the mother. The father kept correspondence that had gone on and he found out all of the lies the mother had been telling the father, and in turn, himself. It was very hurtful, especially coupled with conspiring his mother had done with his ex-wife. He has not told his father about what is below, however.
To outsiders, it appears that he is not getting better since his divorce, but just muddling along. He only buys used vehicles (same as I do), has an efficiency apartment in the city (because that is where the money is), dresses average, and generally looks like the average guy. Nothing fancy for anyone to see. He maintains a climate controlled storage unit where he squirrels away acquisitions that he obtains for his enjoyment or future wants (camping gear, 250cc dual sport motorcycle, reloading equipment, etc).
His ex still keeps tabs on him through HIS mother, and he has heard them laughing at him when she forgot or didn't know that he was around (I'm not sure of those particulars). He just laughs to himself and continues to seem to have no motivation. His mother has told him that she is getting older and he will need to start taking care of her in the next couple of years, but would appreciate some money now to help her along in her retirement. She likes to go to Atlantic City and gamble, and needs to the money to cover her losses. The ex sometimes goes with her. He gives her $50-100, every once in awhile "when he has saved a little." She's retired and he has more years to work and save it seems. Female logic.
He has received promotions and his pay has more than doubled in the last 14 years since the divorce. What they do not know is that he built up a 6-months emergency fund, then started investing pretty aggressively, and owns almost 200 acres and a small cabin with a workshop (all stone and timber frame - the pictures are gorgeous), bordering a national forest. He is 49 now and by the time he turns 52 he should have the property and construction costs paid for, and he will continue to invest. At 55 he plans on ghosting from everyone (no kids and the family in general is very dysfunctional) and going to his property that is owned by an LLC setup in a state that does not allow public disclosure of officers. He said most of his investments will be moved to tangible commodities and he will have no taxable income, as he will be keeping only tax-free municipal bonds as investments (his VA disability benefit is tax-free). He seems to have thought of everything.
His house was built to be solar efficient (with generator backup) and even uses 12vdc ceiling fans and lighting, has "cigarette" plugs around and only a few 110v outlets. Even the well uses a 12vdc/solar pump, with a hand pump backup that is on the back porch. The shop is setup the same way and he has invested in DeWalt Flexvolt power tools, as well as hand tools. He even has a DeWalt battery powered table saw (I had to look that one up when he told me). There will be nothing in his name for utilities. He is at the edge of where he can use 4G data through his LLC-owned smart phone. He has propane for cooking and wood heat as an option as well.
I never knew any of this until a few months ago. He had played this so close to the vest, but he figured out that my mentality is the same and said that he wished he would have told me earlier as we could have gone in together on the LLC concept. I am very happy for him. There is a large spring fed pond and a couple of nice creeks with trout. He goes out there every three weeks for 3-4 days and looks after the place. He also has a larger storage unit out there that he keeps a rebuilt Jeep CJ in, where he gets an Uber from the airport to the storage unit to get the Jeep (jeep is also in the LLC name). When our schedules mesh together, I have been invited to to take a look, along with our other friend that we served on the same team with.
This guy is a genius. Maybe some of you younger guys can learn from this one. Keep having goals, but just reorient them to be self-serving for your future. Keep what you are doing away from those that can/have hurt you, and really go your own way!!
