Do you ever wonder how some rappers sound confident and raw? How others sound lyrical and soft? Yes, partly it is how they say their rhymes. But what happens when everyone sounds like the same aggravated jersey shore thug like in trap? What distinguishes them then?

I noticed that the most thuggish sounding rappers- Biggie Smalls, ASAP MOB, Tyler the creator- use active action sentences and almost never ever use passive structures.

I walked in the club popping my bottles up (Instead of I was in the club with some bottle service)

She came over with her big booty (Instead of she was here yesterday and had a big booty)

She be reacting, blunt passing, booty shakin (Instead of she was over to talk and we had some blunts while her booty was shaking)

Every sentence creates movement. The subject impacts an object. She did this. I did that. I did this to her. She did this to him. Whenever there are descriptions, they come second. "She came into the club wearing high heels and booty shorts." Instead of "she was in the club with high heels and booty shorts on"

I freestyle rap for fun. I studied the rap patterns because I could never get myself to sound as thug as these big rappers even though I could do my voice just as well. But I realized its because my sentences sound passive. Then i realized day-to-day speech patterns are mostly passive as well (freestyle rap takes a lot from normal speech). There's something there about using active sentences in speech that makes you more engaging, more confident, dominant.

Be aware of how you speak. What kind of sentences do you naturally craft? If you want to be dominant, you can do so by speaking like a thug rapper. I'm not saying you speak in broken english and slurs. I'm saying use their sentence structures and you'll be on the same playing ground.
