No, it's because Morton Thiokol wanted to move hazing into the space age.

It blew up because Nasa skipped a lot of safety issues during the go go days of the space age, and even with warnings not to launch they did anyway.

O rings were not designed to work in that cold an environment and became brittle and made a big firework in the sky.

The crew had absolutely nothing to do with it.

Now it's hard to get a rocket off the ground. They'll scrub a launch because a bird flew by.

No. In short, the rubber O-rings in the solid rocket boosters are designed to operate properly above a certain temperature. Below that, the will not seal the boosters 100%. NASA were under pressure to launch as they had delayed several times before. Despite being warned that launching would cause the shuttle to explode on the launch pad, they went ahead anyway. When the shuttle powered up, the O-ring didn't seal the joint, but the hot gas melted it enough to stop the exhaust from burning through and blowing up the shuttle on the pad. However, when on the way up, the shuttle hit strong crosswinds that knocked out the rubber slag sealing the joint. When the shuttle was given the go for power up, the super heated exhaust from the booster instantly burned through the casing and then through the booster support. The support failed, tipping the booster into the main fuel tank and the whole thing full of liquid oxygen exploded.

I read that like any big engineering disaster? a number of factors came together. ONE being they were trying to "squeeze out" more launches out of the equipment than they should, and that it had become "routine" to launch, which led to complacency.
