Nah, make your retirement money, buy 10 acres, and farm only as much as you want. Do some canning, and use it as supplemental to food you buy. Much more chill.

I wouldn't do it, the pay is very low considering the work hours, the industry doesn't want to pay a fair price, suppliers are trying to rip you off all the time and climate change doesn't make it future-proof. I suggest you get a garden where you can plant veggies, that's already enough work to fill a lot of your weekends...

My family have been farmers for hundred of years, I practically grew up on my grandads farm. It’s a great life, but understand.. a life is exactly what it is. You will have no time for holidays or many days off. It’s a lifestyle and 24/7 occupation especially if you have livestock.

It is it’s good for the soul mind and body. It’s the art of life. Growing food for the human race and giving back feels awesome. All my family are strawberry farmers all of them like 80%. Go for it.

In Australia, being a farmer is one of those occupations with some of the highest suicide rates.

It's not easy work, and you're at the mercy of mother nature and what the market is willing to pay you (bugger all).

Retail milk prices hasn't really gone up for about 20 years here, while operating overheads and living expenses have increased significantly.

As the saying goes in the industry, "If you're breaking even after a yearly season, then you're doing good."

Teching up, to improve production and efficiency, in order to remain competitive and viable is expensive.
You'll be working your arse off, to pay those loans to acquire such assets, and going into repeating cycle but accumulating more work and stress in the process.

But, if it's something that synergises with you, and you're able to thrive off it, then go ahead.
Just make sure that you don't over-romanticise the idea of being involved in the industry, and acknowledge the realities that come with it.

Being a hobby farmer after retirement, is a different matter though.
Solitude, while being more intimate with nature, is a pleasant experience for many.

You should look into beekeeping. I’ve been watching a handful of beekeepers for like a year now and the care they put into keeping their critters alive is heartwarming and incredibly interesting; not to mention if bees go instinct we all suffocate sooner or later.

Sometimes i think about dropping out of college and becoming a farmer. It would be even better since I could use my engineering knowledge to builds to automate the process (not completely). Honestly i feel a sort of fondness for our ancestors, while they didn't have all the amenities that modern day life provides, it would be nice to live life with a simple goal in life, simply hunting, and farming to live to the next day...

Coming from past generations of farmers, it's a lot of work, but worth it if you're able to maintain the lifestyle. Good luck man!
