I don't work with them per se, but I spend a lot of my work day surrounded by them. Some of them are not so great, some of them are awesome. They're people too, paid to provide a service, regardless of whose side they're on. They are the paid 'face' of one side of a conflict, which is why they're demonized.
From experience in talking with many of them I can tell you that a lot of criminal (defense) lawyers, for the majority of cases, don't give two shits about the clients. They're a paycheck. It's stressful, thankless work. There are of course, exceptions to that. Criminal prosecutors ARE passionate about serving the public, but are also not well respected because they're forced to work within the constraints of law, and some people who have been wronged can't accept accept the results the law provides.
Family lawyers are a little different, but for the most part, again, it's just a paid job. But they do seem to invest a little more of themselves in the casework. It's complicated, high emotion work, on both sides. Point is, they're people too.

I don't think it's something they do gleefully. All a lawyer is, is someone who's trained to interpret law and form an arguement on behalf of someone who can't do it themselves. The results on the 'losing' side can be incredibly shitty, yes, but the decisions made by either party after a trial aren't the lawyers responsibility.
Courts are already overloaded. If there were no lawyers, courts would be so insanely overloaded by people who don't know how to research, organize and argue effectively. If everyone would just agree to and compromise on everything, we wouldn't need lawyers to interpret the laws we write as a society. But we don't all agree.
Let me be clear as well, I'm not saying people don't get fucked over... They do. But it's a necessary profession.
