Savage move, but also pretty stupid. The guy didn't seem to be in real danger, especially after that other girl already backed off. Also smashing that bottle could have injured bystanders or even his own friend and could have severely injured the girl. Any kind of legal trouble that comes from that is never worth it.

Best to keep your cool, anticipate your surroundings and avoid these kind of situations as much as possible.
