Narcissists (eternal children), the Dunning-Kruger effect (people thinking they are far more competent than they really are), Hypergamy, and the idea that there are unlimited options with unlimited time all lead to this "splitting" type of thinking.

It's either on or off, black or white, right or wrong, 1 or 0, true or false, good or bad.

The above 2 things are equal in the mind of these people and, since they are the same (obviously they are not) the consequences for both actions are the same.
