When I was a young man, I thought Adriana Lima was the perfect woman. I idolized her--and beautiful women in general--and vowed to work hard so I could be with someone like her. I made this diagram with the hope of helping out any young men stuck in the same mindset.
When I was 21, my big brother married a woman who looked a lot like Adriana--no joke. Light blue eyes, long dark hair, not quite as tall but fit with a perky gym-honed butt, not quite as beautiful but still a head-turner when dolled up. She was well-educated, had a decent job with high prestige albeit mediocre pay, and seemed kind and devoted. She did strike me as a little bit "fake" when she met the family but I brushed it off as nerves.
My big brother is the warmest, funniest, most hardworking and humble guy I know. He got a 6-figure job after a summer internship during his junior year at an Ivy League. He regularly volunteered with underprivileged kids for many years and he is very generous to his family and friends. He was a good athlete until he injured his knee in college but still kept fit while pursuing his career through his twenties and thirties. He's not very tall by inflated female standards (5'11") but we got great hair genes from dad and my bro has very conventionally handsome features. He is the rare kind of guy who will stay up all night with you to help rewrite your midterm paper when your old laptop dies. He is the rare kind of guy who will actually stand up to his own fraternity bros when they are bullying someone.
Anyways, I was his best man. I was genuinely happy for him when he got married--it was a large wedding, with the bride's guests greatly outnumbering my brother's guests. I thought he was forging the perfect life, and I aspired to be like him although I'm not quite as smart or good looking. Over the next few years they had two cute kids, my nephews. My brother continued to be a loving father, a devoted husband, and an excellent provider. His wife stopped working when she got pregnant with baby #1 and pretty much became a stay-at-home mom despite them having a full-time nanny and a weekly maid service. Whatever, she seemed content--she really had nothing to complain about.
Then my brother got cancer. Long and painful story short, she cheated on him with two different men while he was seeking treatment. My brother didn't even have the energy to confront her until recently. Instead of apologizing profusely, she blamed the infidelity on him--his lack of attention towards her since the diagnosis, him having to take a medical leave and possibly having to downsize their lifestyle slightly due to medical bills, how exhausting it was to take care of him "and the kids", the list goes on and on.
My brother does not want a divorce. He is terrified of losing time with the kids. He is totally heartbroken but believes "caretaker fatigue" is mostly to blame, not her. If he dies, his assets and insurance will still go to her. His wife has been living alone in their summer home, doing god knows what, because she "needs space". I heard my brother cry alone in his bedroom last week during my family's visit and I cried for him when I got home.
Do not become my brother. Not for Adriana Lima or for any other woman. Do not become complacent, do not trust blindly, do not worship her. Do not assume she will return all the love, devotion, and time you so willingly give to her. Do not conflate her ephemeral outer beauty with inner beauty--with loyalty, kindness, patience, integrity, honesty. See her flaws, question her motives, consistently imagine your life without her so that your life will not crumble on her whims. You may like her, adore her, even love her--but there is no such thing as a perfect woman.
