This doesn't really work, as in the Scripture, when Mary tells her husband that she's pregnant, he had this exact thought. He freaks out and plans on divorcing her quietly so she isn't executed for adultery. Only the intervention of an angel in a dream convinced him to stay and raise Jesus. After that, he raised Jesus as his own.
Mary didn't go waltzing about taking about how her son was born of God, and for good reason. People didn't just automatically believe it. Hell, when Jesus called himself the son of God as an adult, he was almost killed.

it's funny that so many millions blindly accept this 2000 yr old tale of infidelity as "miraculous" yet if any thot trotted out the "God" angle on a pregnancy today, those same millions would roll their eyes.
[–]Non-PC-Guy6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago (33 children) | Copy Link
So many people blindly accept that we came into existence from a cosmic explosion that happened out of nothing for no reason or purpose, and that all that dead matter magically arranged itself into life and produced sentient beings over billions of years. Sounds more religious than religion to me.
[–]Sandbagicus5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (23 children) | Copy Link
why do religious people need everything to have a reason or purpose, when they live in a world where "Shit happens" so frequently on a daily basis?
There is more evidence of an expanding universe (implying a cosmic explosion) than there is a virgin conception, which is literally impossible.
re: Dead matter magically arranging itself into life: Yeah, about as stupid as a guy getting executed on a cross and coming back to life, zombie-style.
[–]Non-PC-Guy7 points8 points9 points 7 years ago (22 children) | Copy Link
Why do non religious people need everything to not have a reason or purpose when they live in a world of sentient beings who have a strong sense of purpose? The Big Bang theory is woo woo science. Even if the universe is expanding that doesn’t prove it expanded from an explosion. Origins/historical science is very shaky indeed. Observational; more concrete. You admitted dead matter arranging itself into life is stupid; thank you! It actually is and there is no explanation for how that could happen. Even if there was a cosmic explosion that is no explanation for how the explosion happened and was fine tuned for life. It’s harder to believe than magic. At least with God you have an explanation of something intelligent creating it all, rather than it just magically emerging.
[–]Sandbagicus4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Non-religious people don't "need" anything. That's kinda the whole point.
Conversely, religious people need reasons for everything. The arrogance is hilarious - I guess their inability to take in the enormous size of the universe is why they seem to feel they're the center of it.
And sorry - God the Magic Man is a convenient explanation but a childish one. There is no proof nor evidence of a magic man and all religious Creation stories involve shit just magically emerging. All Creation stories terribly violate Laws of Conservation of Energy and Matter.
Lemme guess - those laws aren't provable either?

On a related note, what created God? That's a much harder question to answer than what existed before the Big Bang.
[–]gsharm-1 points0 points1 point 7 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
I think the only real answer could be that he created himself. We can't say that about ourselves, but that doesn't mean we project the same limitation on God.
An even harder question then might be why? And for almost any explanation it seems like the means cannot justify the ends - and this is what people get upset about re: God, and perhaps rightly so.
I think one must also be careful however not to jump to conclusions. For if anyone truly thinks this is all for nowt is then a hypocrite for going along with it.
[–]Non-PC-Guy2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It’s a logical contradiction for something to create itself because it would have to have existed before it existed to create itself. God is conceptually a Prime Mover or the uncaused cause. Meaning he is eternal, uncaused and the absolute foundation of reality outside himself. Only things that begin need a cause, not something eternal. The only other logical explanation for the universe is an eternal impersonal cause. Either way there has to be something eternal or we wouldn’t be here.
[–]ryandiy0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
And maybe the universe created itself. Or it was created by another universe collapsing.
This requires much less of a conceptual leap than imagining an infinitely complex being who not only created himself and the universe, but also created a world full of evidence that we evolved over billions of years without a creator.
Oh, and for some reason it's also very important to him that a certain tribe trims the extra skin on their dicks and avoids eating bacon and lobster. Because surely the creator of the universe doesn't have bigger concerns.
[–]gsharm0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
The kind of hatred toward God you project is what put Christ up on the cross, and perhaps more than anything validates God's existence.
[–]ryandiy1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Your lack of respect for Thor is what causes him to continue giving us powerful storms. And more than anything it validates his existence.
[–]Non-PC-Guy-1 points0 points1 point 7 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
No, because there has to be something that’s eternal or always existed. Why? Because if something hasn’t always existed that means there was once absolutely nothing in the strictest sense. You cannot get something from absolutely nothing in the strictest sense, therefore something always existed. Since all evidence points the universe having a beginning the something that’s always existed cannot be the universe, but only the cause of it. God is described as eternal in the Bible. Even without a God there still has to be something eternal that’s impersonal. The choice is logically between an impersonal/eternal cause or a personal/eternal cause. Those are the only two options. Logic dictates that eternality is real, but it cannot explain how it could be, just that it has to be.
[–]ryandiy0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
Your logic is flawed. Quantum mechanics shows that particles pop into existence all the time. this is the basis of Hawking radiation near black holes. You can get something from nothing.
even if God does exist, it's a pretty big leap to choose any of the thousands of human religions that have been developed over the centuries as being correct. They are all based on documents that make wild claims with very little evidence and are indistinguishable from mythology. The Bible for instance contains nothing that could not have been written by men in the Bronze Age.
Also, notice how in the Bible it was ok for the Kings of Israel to have hundreds of women, but the average man is limited to one wife? This is probably because the Kings had a lot of influence over the creation of the scripture, so they made sure that God's will was in line with their own will.
[–]Non-PC-Guy0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Yes, but not from nothing, from a universe that already exists they pop into existence, so there is a cause; they could not do it without a universe. There may also be other causes of that we simply don’t know. I doubt it happen magically.
[–]ryandiy0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Magically? Like something done by an invisible sky wizard?
Scientists in QM even twist the word nothing, to avoid giving explanations. They really make a fool of themselves, and it’s quite funny to watch: https://youtu.be/v34QjYPuiEA
this is nothing compared to the mental gymnastics that religious people engage in when you ask them difficult questions about their religion.
Plus particles popping into existence in a universe for no known reason is irrelevant to whether God exists or not, and I doubt if you ask a QM scientist whether they think this happens by magic without a cause from literally nothing in strictest sense, they would have to answer no. Nothing in QM doesn’t literally mean nothing like it does in philosophy; it is always something at a rudimentary form. When they use term “nothing” to describe a primordial simplicity I see that as deceptive and only done to worm away from giving explanations. Everything they describe as nothing is really something, without any explanation for how that something got there. This is just pushing the origins debate back, not solving it in any sense.
I have a degree in physics and I've studied quantum mechanics at the university level. No physicist would claim that this happens by magic but they also would not say that there's a cause. Simply a probability of it happening at any given moment. And including that probability is crucial in many calculations such as those in Quantum Field Theory.
Scientists are not generally trying to worm away from explanations or to deceive. They are simply trying to avoid giving an answer which is not supported by evidence. Confidently stating things that are incorrect is a habit of religion, not of science.
[–]RPDunkleBomb1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link
Why wouldn't you "blindly" accept something that has been measured mathematically to have happened?
Like, believe what you want, but the formation and expansion of the universe is objective fact as observed by microwave telescope... You can literally look back in time and see the early stages.
In your defense, what happened in the milliseconds before what we can actually observe, and in the time long before that, is conjecture. Time being relative and all, it probably isn't possible to know.
Let me just lend you this: how arrogant are we, a singular sentient species on a speck of dust that has existed for mere moments in the universe, that we know everything about the creation and that a magical being performed it intentionally? That we have the one true answer, and it just happened to be written two thousand years ago? That existence isn't just a mathematical expression of probability, and that we're the center of everything?
It is far more likely that we know nothing and will amount to nothing before our end.
[–]Non-PC-Guy1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
And as I said even if there were a cosmic bang it does nothing to invalidate God, because such a bang with the correct ingredients for life begs the question.
[–]RPDunkleBomb0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
It doesn't invalidate an god, but it does pretty much invalidate everything Christianity has preached for centuries (the same Christianity who wanted to hang those who believed the Earth revolved around the sun back in the day, oddly enough.)
I think that it's okay to think there's a greater power than we can comprehend, but you start to lose me when you tell me it does things to individual lives for specific reasons and that there are special people on earth that know what it wants and how to make it happy. Everything after the big bang can be traced back to causality and physics, which invalidates the idea that it was a "planned" existence.
[–]Non-PC-Guy0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It doesn’t invalidate Christianity either because a bang has a beginning and the Bible teaches a beginning. Plus the Big Bang has not been proven no matter how much we here it has been. We cannot look back that far in time. We can only make intelligent guesses based on present observations and come up with mathematical theories to describe how it COULD have happened. We’ll never actually know for sure.
Expansion does not equal explosion. It is a guess. Math does not have to equal reality. A model can be false. We can not observe the past to verify any model.
[–]Judah_Earl0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link
There are those scientist that believe in the 'forever universe' model and that the big bang is one of many expansions and contractions throughout the existence of the universe.
Yes, they believe. It is a religion for atheists. They believe in impersonal/eternality. All evidence we have so far points to the universe having an absolute beginning though, which means the eternal thing or cause must be transcendent of the universe. Also eternal time is an absurd concept as you cannot logically have an infinite past prior to any moment. How could an infinite past ever arrive at this moment if it were an infinite duration away. These scientists have proven nothing. All their models contradict one another; there is hardly any consensus in QM.
Basically, I think any science that makes assumptions about the past, especially assumptions about what happened billions of years ago, are clutching at straws. They have no idea; it’s all BS. No one could possibly know what happened that far back; it’s wild speculation. It cannot hold a candle to real observational science. Mathematical theories are not true to reality just because the math works. There are loads of models of the universe where the math works, but they can’t all be true because they are incompatible with one another. Mathematically true does not equal true in reality.

[–]Sandbagicus0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
what's any of that got to do with the impossibility of a virgin conception?
Magic isn't real.
[–]MadPreacher1AD0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
They did manage to get DNA from the Shroud of Turin and they found that the Y chromosome was completely different from what every man on earth has. See we all share the same Y chromosome and it is identical. Only by the mitichondrial DNA can you find a person's lineage. Oh they also only found a total of 24 chromosomes instead of the 46 humans have. So all the other 23 chromosomes only have female markers.
If magic isn't real then why do you believe in the Big Bang and evilution? That's all magic under the repackaged version of alchemy.
[–]Sandbagicus0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
good lord, the shroud is a fake relic used to bilk fools out of their money.
conception needs a penis, which Mary had found before marrying Joseph. Joseph was a cuck.
[–]MadPreacher1AD0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Here I thought you believed in science. The shroud has been determined to be real.
Conception needs only Yahweh's permission. If Miriam was found to be pregnant before marriage both her and the man she slept with would have been put to death. Yosef was following the commandments of Yahweh which made him righteous in Yahweh's eyes. He also was following Levitical law.
I see that your antisemitic views are ingrained. Welcome to ignore.

The whole virgin birth myth was a simple mistake when a scribe mistranslated the word "maiden" for "virgin". Of course the Roman Catholic church took it and ran with it.
This assumes Jesus even actually existed. The Romans were meticulous record keepers and never mentioned Jesus in any records.
[–]Non-PC-Guy2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link
How did Jesus turn water into wine or feed the 5 thousand? This is a book that claims the creator of the universe acted at one point in history in a public way. If such a being exists then such miracles make perfect sense. Even if God doesn’t exist the existence of reality without a creator seems like an even bigger miracle, because everything would have derived for no reason or purpose out of nothing. It would be practically magic that anything exists at all. It would make more sense if there were nothing rather than something.
Space is not nothing, and we don’t know if there isn’t a cause of them popping into space. This on such micro level cannot be observed as to be 100% accurate.

The immaculate conception refers to Mary's birth. "The Catholic Church teaches that God acted upon Mary in the first moment of her conception keeping her "immaculate".[1]

I have often thought this. It's part of human nature to make shit up to save ourselves from humiliation or getting caught in our lies. Back in those day their were so many Gods to worship. Each tribes God was declaring war on the others God. And, our God is bigger and badder than your God etc. So Joe sat down one day and got himself out of a bunch of humiliating shit. And of course Mary went along or she would have been stoned to death. Joseph was her witness. And back then bearing false witness was a fate worse than death.

BBC World Radio did a documentary on this once for Christmas 11, on the often overlooked sacrifice of Joseph, who has to deal with the fact that his wife is carrying someone else's child, but then still cared for the child as his own.

Ah! You did it, love it bro!! Well done.
Except Miriam wasn't married to Yosef at the time Yeshua was conceived. Read the scripture yourself and you will see that Yosef only married her after Yahweh told him to. Since Miriam and Yosef were Jewish then Levitical law kicks in where it's an honor for a husband to raise a child that is a gift from Yahweh. See Samson, Joshua, etc...
I love it when atheists can't even read and understand the story or understand Jewish culture. The lot of them are all antisemitic.
