My boyfriend and I have been together for almost 5 years. We have been planning our engagement for a bit, and I had one big rule for the proposal and that was that he not involve anyone else in the proposal but us. I don't want to get too far into the backstory, but my ex husband essentially went behind my back to ask my parents for my hand, and I ended up forced into the marriage by pressure from him and my parents. My boyfriend knew this and definitely knew my rule because I asked him over and over not to include other people.
In spite of this, he decided to propose by first asking my children (from my first marriage) for permission and then included them in the actual proposal by having them hold up signs during the proposal. I wanted to be happy in the moment, but I was so hurt that he went against the one request I made.
I ended up taking him aside and asking him why he ignored what I asked of him. He told me it was different because they're my children and us getting married is their decision as much as it is mine and his. This really hurt me given that he knew how important my autonomy in the decision was to me. I told him I couldn't say yes to the proposal given the circumstances.
My children are furious with me and my oldest won't even speak to me. My friends called me selfish for not seeing the thoughtfulness in his proposal. I feel like no one is on my side, and I'm starting to wonder if I'm the problem. Am I an asshole for saying no to his proposal because he asked my children for permission and then included them?
Edit to add: thank you for your input. My boyfriend and I talked and he apologized for ignoring my boundary and for putting me in a bad situation. He sat down with my kids to explain everything. Hopefully things will get better, but the engagement is on hold for now because it is still tense.
Oh and to everyone who sent me PMs calling me a bitch and a cunt and whatever else, you can all bite me :)

“He’s looking at the logic and ignoring what matters - WHAT YOU WANT”
That says it all right there. Worship that golden vagina

IF the guy has ANY brain cells left ... he'll take the hint (more like a GIGANTIC red fucking flag actually)...
And ditch this bitch, ASAP.

No, these posts show us why relationships are so bad.

I don't get proposals nowadays. I always thought the proposal was supposed to be the moment where you let your partner know you want to marry them. THAT'S IT! And you think of a nice way to do it, so that they'll hopefully say yes.
Yet nowadays, it's become this nonsense where you first discuss it with your partner, that you're thinking about proposing to them... and THEN you actual propose? Like what the fuck?! What's even the point, since you already discussed it beforehand and know she's gonna say yes?
I bet if this guy hadn't discussed anything about the engagement, and just went with the proposal exactly the way he did, this psycho wouldn't have gotten upset over it.

Women use high expectations and manipulations to coddle their low self esteem issues.

Thankfully there's a few reasonable people to call out her bs and entitlement. She was surprised by everyone's reaction to her being a drama queen. Most of the replies only reinforce that programming modern women have that they deserve everything and if they don't get their way, they are oppressed.

“My kids hate me, my possible fiancée is mad at me, friends and family are telling me I’m wrong - am I the asshole?”
Honestly only a woman would type that in all seriousness and actually expect a nice answer. Any man would see how stupid that is to say and not even post it in the first place.
Again it’s women wanting ALL the positives and NONE of the negatives. I guarantee he has to take someone’s else’s kids feelings into account for EVERY other thing he’s ever done. But magically he’s supposed to know not to do it this one time.
Again they’ll be ‘not his kids’ when it helps her, but then he will be ‘basically their dad’ when she needs the help...

So, I'm going to take the contrarian point here and say that she has the right to say no to a proposal for any reason she wants to, and he has the right to propose in any way he wishes. Likewise if she would prefer to do the proposing then she can do it however she wants, and he can respond as he wishes.
If as MGTOW we want to point out that it is dumb to get married under any circumstances, well, sure. However, it seems a bit silly to raise this particular objection to how it is done. They're adults, they can live as they wish. That applies to her as much as to him. If their desires are incompatible and neither is willing to budge then they won't have a relationship, and that is also fine.
Now, if you want to reject somebody you have to live with the consequences of that decision.

If she feels there's no control over her marriage, its her problem to fix, not his.

I got to admit, the way she acted is the same what I di when handed an ultimatum, so I honestly dont hate her for this

The guy had second thoughts but for whatever reason didn't have the heart to simply break up. So, he came up with a brilliant idea to violate his girlfriend's proposal rule, so that he is much less of an asshole when he does break up. That's my take on this.

Well.... shit. If i were in her shoes i'd have said no too. What the guy pulled is just fucking retarded. Women are easy. She literally told him what she wants....
smfh simps, can't even fuck their life up properly.
no, the proposal is between two people at this day and age.

He's trying to be a good family man by asking the children. Her request is unreasonable. It probably stems from difficulties in self direction and is something she needs to work on. She should join /WGTOW.
