Wholeheartedly agreed. Most people want to say that ol' Musky is gonna change the world with his fancy electric self-driving trucks but I've been close to the industry for years. Worked as a lumper/unloader for many years. Truckers and trucks ain't going anywhere, at least not any time soon.

I can also kinda see where a lot of drivers will hold back on a lot of that shit. Out of all the truckers I've talked to, 80% of them despise automatic transmission on their trucks. I doubt electric is gonna take the world by storm until it's more efficient and less costly than regular diesel tractors. It would be a good thing but the self-driving thing? Nah, all it takes is one fucking computer bug or one wrong line of code and a shit-ton of people will be dead. I know the STEM bros want to act like we're gonna be living in some 'brave new world' come ten or twenty years but I'll believe it when I see it.

Thanks for what you do brother. If it weren't for you and guys like you, we wouldn't have jack shit on the shelves to buy and prices would be insane. Stay safe out there.

Man, I always shake my head at that shit. I've known a lot of truckers personally and I've worked in logistics/warehousing for most of my days employed. Great fuckin' dudes. I'd like to do it myself one day but I've gotta get my shit together a little better first. Seems like a great career for a MGTOW who wants to travel and see the country and doesn't mind solitude. I always show respect to drivers out on the road and I always see fuckin' cars pulling out infront of trucks, tailgating them or blowing off the back door. It's fuckin' insane. Brakes are good but not that good. Then they blame the driver when somebody gets killed by doing stupid shit on the highway.

I worked in a warehouse for a retail store and we had a giant parking lot that was very rarely all the way full. The management there used to let truck drivers park there overnight or while they were waiting for their load. Now they did away with that, told them they can't park there anymore, and there's pretty much nowhere else in this small rinky-dink ass town with space enough to park a truck. Glad I don't work there anymore because I would have told them they're full of shit for doing that.

Yeah, they always yap about how 'y'all are gonna get replaced by autonomous trucks' and it's just like, yeah, maybe in a hundred years. By then most of us will be dead so who cares? They forget too that a lot of places that ship well...everything are in the middle of bumfuck nowhere with no GPS and shitty roads. That shit takes talent and navigation skills. A self-driving truck won't be able to do that for a very long time. It's either the self-driving truck spiel or the whole caricature of truckers being meth-heads, serial killers or fat guys. A lot of truck stops have gyms now, they drug test like a motherfucker so it would be very difficult to do any drug and still keep your CDL, and the serial killer shit is based on like one or two guys that did that. It's all bullshit.

Got any tips for somebody who's looking to get into the industry? I'm hoping to do that here in a couple years. Just now hit 24 so I'm just now getting to the right age where they'll hire.

I give you guys like 5 years. I see the need for drivers in cities. But I don't see a need for long boring highways. There will be big locations where the load of the big trucks is switched to smaller ones that are easier to maneuver. If it gets cheaper to use self driving trucks those location where a real driver is needed will adapt. If need be, they put cables into the ground or install GPS amplifiers or drive the truck from the street to the final location. And regarding safety and idiots of other drivers: you know yourself how much stuff is already in the trucks (or at least heard off, in case you drive an outdated old one). Those technics are already enough to follow a lead truck and keep a constant distance, break in case someone gets in between (they already do it) and close the distance once he's away again. Now imagine communication between all those trucks. Essentially it will be a train on the road. Platooning is currently tested in Germany on the Autobahn 9. This means there is traffic! Not just a car every 25km but heavy traffic and people driving 100mph (+/- 30 mph).

I am not talking about electric trucks. I talk about an autonomous diesel truck.

Mining companies are also switching to autonomous trucks in big coal mines.

I don't see a future for most of you guys.

Not going to happen in 5 years, no way. What you seems to forget that there will be need to also rebuild the infrastructure, I can’t see modern being used for self driving. Even on highways trucks can’t fuel themselves.

I remember seeing on the news a self driving Tesla got in an accident, just one glimpse I knew exactly where it happened, i95 north Connecticut where 95 and 91 splits off, right there they literally change the road every few months, some of the older white lines are still visible and that’s going to set self driving vehicles way back because they dig up the roads ever summer.

You’re even say it yourself . Cables, gps , sensors, building places to switch to smaller trucks... and let’s no forgot dropping trailers, hooking and unhooking air lines. Plus current equipment, is designed to be handled by a human(just watch someone hooking up doubles and triples) you would have to seriously upgrade or even replace the current equipment. There is absolutely no way in hell all that is going to happen in 5 years.

Self driving trucks are going to need some much assistance why even get rid of the driver and again, unless they are going to sent a programmer to every shipper and receiver in the country to help these trucks figure out how to drop their loads, I can see drivers losing their jobs but in 5 years???? Be realistic dude lol

You seem to ignore that I talk about platooning. In case of that changed road, humans drive in front and five trucks follow in close distance. Of course the human has to take those other trucks into account (incl technical support to communicate with the trucks). So his tasks will have higher responsibility and is harder to do and only the good ones will do it, but only one driver is needed for most of the time. And if needed he can maintain all trucks. Technology is used to replace the simple jobs. In your case the 1000km straight ahead and humans will still do the difficult ones. Of course humans are needed in the depots to do alle the tasks you described. But this can be done by cheap uneducated people. They get some weeks of training and are paid minimum wage. You have a save job, as long as you are cheaper than technology. Once the companies charge money for not being able to send a self driving truck to a place, there will motivation to upgrade and adapt. You're right that in 5 years there will still be humans driving most of the trucks, but not all.
